Somewhere We Belong by Damon "DarkMyau" Suffin

Author's note: Somewhere I Belong by Linkin Park is the song I used for the story.

It was the fourth day of trekking through the sands of Aridia and Laya was tired. Tired of brushing sand out of her hair, tipping sand out of her boots and dusting sand off her dress. Aridia's unforgiving sun baked down on her tired shoulders. Since she had been revived from cryogenic sleep, her emotions had been put through a wringer. The trek to Mystoke had been rough on her. Trudging through the cold snow had been the easy part. Mystoke's castle of silence was tattooed on her brain. The final words of her sister and the confirmation of it all by the masters at Sky Haven. She had been shaken by what she had learnt but she understood her destiny and what she had to do.

For weeks now Laya had travelled the worlds with Sean and Kara. She had watched them grow darker and darker as their rage overtook them. They seemed to only come alive while fighting. The rest of the time they walked ahead of her, heads bowed and silent. She felt alone and had finally reached her breaking point.

"That's enough!" Laya suddenly screamed. Sean and Kara turned quickly in surprise. Laya stared hard at both of them, daring them to respond. Laya continued "We have been traveling together for months and neither of you have said a single word! All you do is brood. I know life is hard and I know you have both suffered. So have I! My sister, your legendary Laya, is dead. All my friends are dead and gone. But how are you ever going to heal if you don't stop bottling up your feelings!?" Laya glared hard at Sean and Kara. "Don't you even care about what's happening on this ship?" Sean scowled as Kara answered "You think you're so much better than us, don't you! The Legendary Laya! Well you're not! I am Kara Kay Eshyr! I am a legend too!" Laya looked at her "I don't think I am better than anyone." Sean scowled "Nonsense! You are always the leader, and us just your little tag-a-longs!" Laya composed herself "If you both have something to say to me, then just say it!" Sean and Kara stared hard at Laya.

Kara (sadly): "When this began"

Sean (scowling): "I had nothing to say and I get lost in the nothingness inside of me"

Kara (sadly): "I was confused"

Sean (scowling): "And I let it all out to find that I'm not the only person with these things in mind"

Kara (sadly): "Inside of me"

Sean (forcefully): "But all that they can see the words revealed
is the only real thing that I've got left to feel"

Kara (blankly): "Nothing to lose"

Sean (scowling): "Just stuck, hollow and alone
and the fault is my own, and the fault is my own"

*Both of the warriors stare coldly into Laya's eyes*

Sean/Kara: "I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I've felt so long
Erase all the pain till it's gone
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I'm close to something real
I wanna find something I've wanted all along
Somewhere I belong"

*Sean bows his head as Kara steps forward*

Kara (Angrily): "And I've got nothing to say. I can't believe I didn't fall right down on my face"

Sean (sadly): "I was confused"

Kara (Angrily): "Looking everywhere only to find that it's not the way I had imagined it all in my mind"

Sean (sadly): "So what am I"

Kara (Angrily): "What do I have but negativity cause I can't justify the way, everyone is looking at me"

Sean (sadly): "Nothing to lose"

Kara (Angrily): "Nothing to gain, hollow and alone
and the fault is my own, and the fault is my own"

Kara/Sean: "I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I've felt so long
Erase all the pain till it's gone
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I'm close to something real
I wanna find something I've wanted all along
Somewhere I belong"

Kara: "I will never know myself until I do this on my own"

Sean: "And I will never feel anything else, until my wounds are healed"

Kara (Emotionally): "I will never be anything till I break away from me"

Sean (Emotionally): "I will break away, I'll find myself today"

Kara/Sean (pained): "I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I've felt so long
(Erase all the pain till it's gone)
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I'm close to something real
I wanna find something I've wanted all along
Somewhere I belong"

Sean (Almost crying): "I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I'm somewhere I belong"

Kara (Almost crying): "I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I'm somewhere I belong"

Kara/Sean (sadly): "Somewhere I belong"

Kara said quickly "Am I supposed to go back to Dahlia? Back to my father who never gave a damn about me!? Back to those narrow halls where people look at me like I'm some kind of freak!?" Her tears started to fall on the last word.

Sean glared hard at Laya "And where am I supposed to go!? My family IS DEAD! My people are gone! All I have left is my sword and two cyborgs! Wren and Mieu looked shocked at that, but neither android said anything.

Both warriors slumped into the sand, their chest heaving as they both struggled to control the tears that flowed down their faces. As hard as they tried they couldn't stop crying at the raw emotion they had both finally unleashed. Rushing to sit in front of them Laya placed a hand gently on each of their cheeks and lifted them gently so they could look her in the eyes. "Can't you both see? You're not alone at all; you have each other." Kara and Sean look at each other in surprise but turn back to Laya quickly. "And you can always live in Mystoke with me." Laya smiled. Kara seemed to look hopefully at that, but Sean's head still faced the sand. Laya looked at Sean sadly. "Let's get to Hazatak. It's been a long day."

Later in Hazatak, Kara was tired yet restless. She couldn't stop thinking about everything that had happened that day. All her life she had been a soldier. As she looked at herself in the mirror, she wondered at the girl who sat before her. Without her armour and headband on, she looked just like any other girl. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps and harsh whispers that were passing her door.

"Wren, stop! He needs some time to get his thoughts together." Mieu hissed at the large android as he marched quickly towards Sean's door. "He can't stay hurt and sad forever, Mieu. He will end up just like..." Wren paused. The memories came flooding back as he remembered him. "No, Mieu, not again."

Kara looked puzzled as she slowly followed the two androids. As Wren burst into Sean's room, she quickly rushed to the door, peering in at the confrontation unfolding before her.

Sean looked up in surprise at Wren as he entered, a stern expression on the android's face. Sean was sitting crossed legged in the middle of his bed. He had been staring at the wall for hours. "Wren, please." Mieu begged. But Wren would not be silenced "Is that all we are to you!? A couple of old androids who will follow you and serve you all your life?" Sean looked at Wren blankly. Wren frowned deeply as he continued. "We raised you! All your life both Mieu and I have been with you. We love you! Just as we loved Ayn. We were with him his whole life and believe it or not, we miss him too." Mieu again tried to pull Wren back, but he wouldn't budge. "It's been a long and hard day." She tried to sound cheerful as she said it, but failed miserably. "No, Mieu! Not this time. Sean, you are not going to end up like Rulakir!" Mieu gasped at the mention of their ancient master. But Wren continued. "One thousand years ago, we let him suffer in silence and it consumed him. He was so miserable... We didn't know how to help him." Wren and Mieu bowed their heads sadly. "I won't stand by and let that happen to you, Sean! You are going to talk to us. We are your family, not tools you can throw away!"

Sean sniffed as tears threatened to poor from his eyes again. He slowly moved to the end of his bed and rose to stand in front of Wren. His sniffs turned into sobs as he broke down again. Sean buried his head in Wren's chest crying hard. Mieu rushed to put her arms around Sean as Wren held him. "It's alright, Sean, we are here" Wren whispered softly. "I'm so sorry, Wren, Mieu. I love you both too... I just miss them all so much. I... I just don't know what to think and feel" Mieu stroked his green hair "It's alright, we will figure it out together." Wren smiled down at Mieu as they held their young master. "Are you going to come in? Or do you prefer the door way?" Mieu said without looking up from Sean.

Kara gasped in surprise. Wren and Sean turned to look at her. Sean was clearly embarrassed that he was crying. Kara slowly walked in, encouraged by Mieu and Wren's warm smiles. "Oh, get in here" Mieu said pulling Kara into the embrace with Sean and Wren. The four stayed like that looking at each other for hours. Sean and Kara's eyes finally met. Slowly they leaned forward. Tears in Sean's eyes, he tried to smile at Kara. She looked back at him, so uncomfortable being so close to him, yet she couldn't fight the need to move even closer. Their lips met slowly, their eyes not moving from the others.

From the door, Laya had watched it all. She smiled. "It's about time". Sean and Kara quickly moved away from each other, blushing. "Mieu, Wren? Why don't we let these two be alone for a little while?" Laya said. The androids nodded and slowly walked out of the room. They both turned and smiled at Sean, who smiled back at them. Laya smiled "I didn't know you had it in you". Laya laughed as she left, closing the door behind her.

Finally alone, Sean forced himself to say it. "I love you, Kara". She looked shocked. "I... I love you too". Awkward silence seemed to last forever as they both stared at everything in the room so as not to look at the other again. Kara finally broke the silence "So what do we do now?" she asked. "I'm not sure. Want to train?" he said. Kara laughed at that and embraced him again.

Mieu looked up at Wren as he walked quickly to their room. He finally just stood there smiling down at her. "I think Sean is going to be just fine." Mieu smiled "He was always going to be fine. He was a strong child, remember." Wren chuckled "Remember the time he got his head stuck in a door?" Mieu laughed at that, but turned serious as a dark shadow crossed her face. "Wren? Do you ever think about him?" Wren's smile faded. "Yes" he finally added. "I miss him sometimes. I miss all of them." Mieu nodded. "We both know what will be at the end of this. We are going to have to kill him" Wren closed his eyes. Mieu moved to stand in front of Wren. "Will you be able to do it?" Wren looked into Mieu's eyes. "Yes" he finally said. Mieu looked down as sadness crossed her face, and was shocked to see Wren's hand under her chin lifting her face up to his. Wren slowly moved closer to Mieu and pressed his artificial lips to hers. Mieu closed her eyes and held him tight. When they finally parted she grinned looking up at him "You know, you are not really a man." Wren grinned back "I'll add a few burping and scratching programs to my memory."
