Good drawing tablet to draw fan art?

Postby Zucca » Thu Apr 02, 2009 5:22 pm

I'd like to hear if any of you use any tablets to draw your fan art. I'm about to buy one but I haven't chosen which one. So I need some opinions, please. :)

Wacom is top notch and works with Linux but which model is good?
Newest model is actually a LCD display drawing board. :) But it's quite expensive: 2200 euros. :|

I'm trying to find some good reviews...

To draw lines, I think I got a better deal buying a scanner to put clean line art in my PC than a tablet to draw them on screen.

But I miss a tablet when it comes to colouring. Making fine details with a cranky mouse is what awaits us all in hell.

I use a Graphire 4 for my stuff, and I do all my work in OpenCanvas, which is probably why my lines are all messy and blurry as all hell.

Still, I'm quite enjoying it. Got it used for like $90 or something.

This looks cool, sounds cool and features are great. But a guy who does reviews for a Finnish magazine said that he hasn't used any non-Wacom board that's good. I guess it's better to buy A6 sized Wacom than any other board sized A4... :| Even if Wacoms cost nearly 4 times much as same sized non-Wacoms.
Anyway Wacom has great support on Linux too. :)

I rushed to local home-entertainment store and bought Wacom Bamboo (the black one in the picture).
It was second cheapest from Wacom, but it has more than twice the resolution (detail) than the chepest one. Cheapest model was around 55 euros when this Bamboo was 83,90. I hope it works well. :)

I know this animator guy, he is a pro and runs his own studio. He uses and recomends the Bamboo.

I tried Bamboo on Vista without installing drivers (just plugged it in).
I tested it with Anaglyph flash program. Worked pretty good at first glance. There isn't eraser or undo in that flash app, but I still drew a Nice PacMan picture. Unfortunately I don't have 3D glasses here (at my gf). ;) I'll tell you how this works on my Linux when I get back to home.

Ok. I finally had time to configure my tablet for my Linux system.
I had to upgrade kernel. After doing that I also upgraded the whole system (world).
Now it works fine. I just need to tune it up for my hand.
You'll be seeing my fan art on some sunny day. I'll use standard compressed scaleable vector graphic format (svgz), but I'll provive png exports for my best works.
