Thanks for posting these! I've been working on translating the battle message maps.

Here is what I can suggest for ones you aren't sure of. I can provide you more later, but for now:

I'm not too sure on these guys:
--- address = 1a8f50, pointers = [1a5c30], c_style
カイトカインド =>Kite Kind??**
--- address = 1a8f60, pointers = [1a5b9c], c_style
シーシアロード --> Sea Seer Lord?
--- address = 1a8f70, pointers = [1a5b08], c_style
シーシア --> Sea Seer ?**
--- address = 1a8f80, pointers = [1a5a74], c_style
シーシザース Sea Scissors?**
--- address = 1a90d0, pointers = [1a4ee4], c_style
チョーキンロット => Choking/Jumping Rot** (The pronunciation of "to jump" in Japanese is Chooyaku, with the kanji derived from the Chinese for Jump. Based on the animation of the enemy, it is probably more likely Jumping Rot, but I wanted to see what others thought.)

--------

These I am pretty confident of:
--- address = 1a8cf8, pointers = [1a7194], c_style
バンリーダー => Van Leader**

--- address = 1a8fc0, pointers = [1a5824], c_style
フェイリア -->Feiria**

--- address = 1a9040, pointers = [1a5418], c_style
ベリッチリーチ=> Belch Leech (I almost went with belly, but the the chi makes me think of belch, which means a loud burp in English) It fits with the same theme as its cousin, the Vomiting Leech**

--- address = 1a9080, pointers = [1a5134], c_style
グラススロータラ => Grass Slaughterer**

--- address = 1a90f8, pointers = [1a4dbc], c_style
スカルリッカー => Skull Licker**

--- address = 1a90e8, pointers = [1a4e50], c_style
キャリア => Carrier**

--- address = 1a9268, pointers = [1a4354], c_style
パンツァアント => Panzer Ant** (which is German for Armor, Carapace) [Edited from Pincher Ant, because I am a dullard]

Sea Scissors would be right. As for the other crab forms, Sea Shear(s) is probably what was intended, being another scissor-like object.

I think Choking Rot would be right, considering that it's a parasitic lifeform, and latches onto the Carrier enemy.

ポイズンドアロー is Poisoned Arrow (Poizundo Aroo).

フライングペドラ Flyingpedra (Furaingupedora)
センチペドラ Centipedra (Senchipedora)
グリディペドラ Greedypedra ? (Guridipedora)

アメボイデ Amoeboide (Ameboide)
シュライムゼレ Shuraimuzere is the katakana, no clue about what it could be. Shuraimu and Zere are both similar to Slime (Suraimu) and Jelly (Zerii), so maybe it's meant to be a corruption of the two?
ミキサメーベ Mixamoebe (Mikisameebe)

ブリザーダ Blizzarda (Burizaada)

アイルーロス Ailuros (Airuurosu) *Ailuros is Greek for "cat"
リュンクス Lynx (Ryunkusu)

ダーティアンゴラ Dirty Angora (Daati Angora) *Angora is a breed of rabbit

クライブリンガー Cry Bringer (Kurai Buringaa) *Might want to change the name a bit to fix the Engrish.
デスロウナー Death Loaner is my best guess for this one. (Desu Rounaa)

ファイアレムレス Fire Lemures (Faia Remuresu)
ストームレムレス Storm Lemures (Sutoomu Remuresu)
キングレムレス King Lemures (Kingu Remuresu)
In Greek mythos, lemures are spirits of the dead.

Good call on the Sea Shear and Sea Shear Lord, Steve-O! Also, I want to update the Pincher Ant to Panzer Ant:
--- address = 1a9268, pointers = [1a4354], c_style
パンツァアント => Panzer Ant** (which is German for Armor, Carapace)

I can't believe I derped on those :oops:

As of Greek heritage myself, I'm a big fan of the mythology...so, I can confirm Ailuros for cat and the Lemures.

I do have one thing that's been bugging me for a while: it's the original subtitle for Phantasy Star II. I've seen a few translations of it, and none ever seemed "right" in English. Why is this important? It's the next to last line in the game, word for word.

還らざる時の終わりに...
彼らは、いったい何を見るのだろうか?

"還らざる時の終わりに..." is the subtitle of the game in Japanese. I have seen it translated as "the end of time that can never be returned to" and "the end of the Lost Age." I have a very strong suspicion that it's a metaphor that doesn't literally translate well into English. I have a couple of alternatives that I would like to use:

1. "It's the End of an Era:" The Japanese language doesn't always state the subject; for English, it's needed. End of an Era is a phrase used in English to define a period of time that is going to end imminently. It's usually used to infer that it is a sad change, but it has been used to denote a horrible time in history being replaced by something good. Depending on the perspective of who would be saying it, it's nice and vague: some would consider it a positive thing to save Algol from Mother Brain...but others would consider it a negative thing since the technological dark age brought on the Great Collapse. Also, when the PSU servers went down in Japan, some Japanese bloggers referenced the subtitle to denote the loss. This makes me suggest this is probably the closest I can get to convey the full meaning of the Japanese and have the same literary power in English.

2. "It's the End of the Golden Age:" This term was originally used in Greek texts, so it could have a place here. It's is usually used retrospectively to note a great period of prosperity that has been long gone. Now, I have seen Golden Age literally translated in Japanese dictionaries with the gold kanji, but I am not sure it has the same connotation as it does in languages with Greek/Latin roots. This is also more of a spoiler alert than 1., because it would show up in the game's subtitle, so I'm not sure this would be the No. 1 choice.

3. I am against the End of the Lost Age for two reasons: #1, this phrasing is NEVER used in English; #2, There is a GBA game called The Golden Sun: The Lost Age in both English and Japanese: "The Lost Age" is written completely differently in Japanese and translates roughly to the same thing in English.

I hope I am not coming across as a pompous fool. I am hardly an expert in Japanese, but after G1 I have been trying to improve my skills and try to pass along the nuances by using the equivalent language in English ; since the space limitation for game text is likely to be removed thanks to Tryphon, I focus on that instead of trying to pick what English I can to make it physically fit.

Anybody with an alternative perspective on this or more insight on Japanese, please share with us. This is a fun learning experience and this game translation is meant for all of us die-hard fans!

Litteraly, it means "At the end of the time which don't come back", I asked a friend who us a professional translator in Japan for the title because I wanted to add it the title screen.

Of course, the literal don't sound that good but with it, you might be able to find a sentence in english with the same meaning and which sounds good.

Wooo, my bad for "ブリザーダ", I read it as "フリザード" and it didn't shocked me as an enemy in "Dragon Quest : Dai no Daibouken" had the same name (so I misread both "ブ" and "ダ" ).

What is weird is that, sometimes, the katakanas isn't the "official" writing for the word. Dunno if the one who did the names really did some errors or if it's done on purpose o_O

Thanks for those propositions, I compiled them in a new list :

--- address = 1a89f0, pointers = [1a8820], c_style
ダークファルス => Dark Force (though the most result you get with "ファルス" is "Farce", but tryphon don't like it, and same for me. We can also see that the team that made the game didn't seem very good with english words as the word "illusionist" seems to also have an error, but I don't think it could be a word other than illusionist)

還らざる時の終わりに...

There are lots of ways you could render this in English. Here are some suggestions.

(1) at the time of no return
(2) at the end of an/the age
(3) at the end of days

I think (1) is probably the best rendering in English. The phrase 還らざる時/帰らざる時 is probably a variation on the theme of phrases like 帰らざる道 ("Path of No Return") and the movie title 帰らざる河 ("River of No Return"). Basically, the phrase denotes the idea that "there's no going back". It could be argued that a more "accurate" rendering would be "at the end of the time of no return", but that sounds pretty awkward and bad IMO. (2) and (3) aren't very accurate, but I added them becuase I think they sound cool.

1. "It's the End of an Era:"
The Japanese language doesn't always state the subject; for English, it's needed.

Please don't use "It's" in the subtitle. First, you don't always need a subject in English (there's no overt subject in the preceding sentence, for example). Plus, no offense, but adding "It's" to the subtitle makes the game sound like a bad sitcom or something. For example, consider these movie titles containing subtitles:

(4) Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
(5) Resident Evil: Apocalypse
(6) Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life

Now consider them again containing "It's":

(4') Pirates of the Carribean: It's the Curse of the Black Pearl
(5') Resident Evil: It's the Apocalypse
(6') Tomb Raider: It's the Cradle of Life

I hope it goes without saying that the addition of "It's" makes these movies sound a lot less serious and closer to something like, say, "It's Pat!". :D

2. "It's the End of the Golden Age:"

I wouldn't use the term "Golden Age". You mention yourself that it's probably not the best choice. Plus, although the time of Mother Brain might have seemed like somewhat of a golden age for the people in Algol, it was only superficial, so it wouldn't be appropriate to refer to the age as being golden (i.e. positive).

Agreed and agreed.

I am hardly an expert in Japanese, but after G1 I have been trying to improve my skills and try to pass along the nuances by using the equivalent language in English...

That's cool. I'd say you're doing a great job for a relative beginner in Japanese. Just be careful. Japanese is a great language, but it can also be pretty mundane, too, so try not to look too much into things. Sometimes a spade is just a spade. Also, shoot for naturalness. Don't try to force in all the original nuance if it makes things sound awkward. If something ends up sounding crappy, ditch it and try something else.

I hope I am not coming across as a pompous fool.

Me too. :D

Paul Jensen, thanks for your input! For the subtitle itself, I agree that adding It's would be awkward (the It's Pat brought back old SNL memories :lol: ). The only time I would use the it's would be when it is quoted in the game itself by a character (?), and only because it's followed by a line along the lines of "I wonder what they'll see." It could go both ways here, but definitely not in the subtitle itself. I apologize for not making my intention clearer.

Thanks for the compliment, Paul :D I'm a beginner, I have no delusions about that, but I would like to give both languages the respect they deserve. Exact does not equal equivalent. I grew up around people telling Greek jokes I didn't get, only to have them translated for me into the exact English and realizing that I wouldn't get it unless I knew the pun behind the punchline. BTW, you aren't coming across as pompous; you are sharing your knowledge with us, and I am grateful for that.

This is my take on translations in general. We're a diverse community, and it would be fun to see how others feel about this sort of thing. English is my first language. I grew up reading and writing Greek, too (though I am very rusty and always kinda stunk at speaking) and I know some French as well. To me, English is a huge language, with many rules (and exceptions to the exceptions of rules) and words; I agree that it's easy to drown in it trying to find a way to encompass a nuance in the original language...but it's fun, too. The hardest things to translate between languages are idioms, proverbs, and metaphors...the culture that uses the basic language creates these. Translate them exactly word by word into another language with a different culture, and it doesn't come out right, because it shouldn't. Heck, even dialects of a language can differ. However, we as human beings due tend to share certain similar experiences no matter where and when we lived, so there usually an equivalent somewhere...or we just borrow the word. Both English and Japanese are good at that :D

I am curious if I should also contact Rebecca Capowski, and see if she would be interested in participating in the G2 translation process. She has been around the PS community for years, and translated the Compendium and many other things. I think someone mentioned in a different thread that she's working on translating PSIII's Japanese script. Is there anyone who knows if/how I should contact her?

Hello!
I'd also like to throw my hat into the ring if there's any translation I can help with. I would really like to see this done and will contribute if I can.
I'm well-versed (if a bit slow) at Japanese, and am also a professional writer so I'm using to endlessly rewording things to cram them into specific spaces :P
Also, reading the previous discussion about German terms in PS blew my mind, so that's awesome too.
Let me know if there's any way I can help!

Since it's "pe" not "be" I don't think that can be right. The whole reads "porinsupekutaa," which to me looks like it may be a merging of "pori" "insupekutaa" as in "police inspector" or "poly inspector". This also goes with the theme of them Army Eye-class.

I would say "Servo" rather than "Sabo;" it is a machine so it seems to fit...

Or Russian? Both "sakofu" and "masorofu" could be Russian family names (Sarkoff/Sarkov and MAsorov/Masoroff). As for "Musooru," I don't think muscle is right. Maybe something Russian here too? Are these famous Russian wrestlers or something..?

1) Perhaps, but 'inspector' seems less likely because it's 'ri' and not 'i', and purinsu is pretty recognizable as it is.

2) That's entirely possible, yeah. I don't have the images to compare with.

3) It was a stretch, yeah, but it's the closest word I can find. Some of them may not be intended to be words, but with no precedent we may just have to fill in the blanks as we like. Sarkoff and Masoroff do kind of work together, for example, except that 'mo' is pretty distinct from 'ma' in pronunciation.

Also, that font makes the ° look a lot like ".

But the katakana doesn't match up for "prince."
ポリンスペクター (Porinsupekutaa)
You'd need a プ instead of the ポ for that to be "prince" at the beginning.

"Pori" is a slang / abbreviated form of "police" in Japan, so Polinspector is probably what they were shooting for.
ポリ + インスペクター = ポリンスペクター
