Phantasy Star Pornable 2 NAO!!

Postby Wing-0 » Thu Dec 17, 2009 6:43 pm

My copy of Phantasy Star Portable 2 arrived today from my cousin in Japan. WOO!! I'm so glad he decided to go there to teach Spanish, muahaha.

I just imported one of my characters to try the game itself. The customization for a new character are much better, as are the graphics. Nice!

I'll post moar info as I discover things in this little game.

I have it too. This is what PSU should have been from the very beginning! Amazingly good game, seriously... at least, much better than PSU or the first PSP!

Furthermore, lol @ the topic title. I see what you did there, sir.

With a name like that, it'd be a sin, to not do such a joke...

Okay. I've been playing nearly nonstop this game since I got it (vacations for the win!), so I can now give you an accurate "review" of this game. I haven't finished it, and I will more than likely take a full year to do it. Not the story mode, that'll be short work, but the game's content is... massive...

Get ready, chain of posts coming because I can't boot up my computer since a few days ago.

Is this version worth it? The answer is a resounding YES. The game engine has been revamped, the content is, as far as I can see, massive and the sheer amount of leveling is enormous for a PSP game.

Like the previous installments, one mission has four versions labeled C, B, A and S. Nothing new. But unlike the first PSp, which basically copied and pasted the PS2's missions, this adds several new maps, and slightly tweaks SOME, not all of the old missions to give them a different order, so you don't walk the same exact path for the one millionth time.

The combat system feels much quicker AND responsive...

The enemies have a nasty habit of swarming on you, some try to surround you and others that are immobile keep shooting at you barrages that can drain your HP in less than five seconds if you aren't careful.

The PP for each weapon has been done away with. Initially, I thought this would be bad, but feeling it in practice, I like this method better. The PP meter fills quickly and if you connect accurately, charging each hit, the PP fills much quicker, letting you spam those same enemies that were pummeling you less than five seconds ago.

The evasive roll is also a nice addition, especially when monsters like the Svaltus begins doing that attack in which it swings its sword, hitting everything in reach. Now, you just time a roll correctly, and you're safe.

Defense has been added as well, letting you use a shield, which you can equip with a saber, wand, single dagger, whip, etc. But can be executed with two handed weapons like dwin daggers and swords. It drains PP, but it's no real problem...

Timing your defense command can also have nice effects, but I'm not that good yet at it, so I can't really say what happens accurately.

Also, the class system has been modified heavily. The three basic classes, Hunter, Ranger and Force are still there, with the addition of Braver, which is different in something I haven't tried so far. My imported character is a Hunter, so I left her like that and her progress has been quite nice, so I'll leave experimentation with Braver to someone else.

An important change is that unlike having set weaponry, each class seems more like a free form system, with status bonus like HP, Attack power and the like being characteristics of each class this time around. Meaning that some hunter could equip a rod, but most likely attack with low level techs. More experimentation is in order.

For the free form system, you allocate points for each particular weapon type you want to use. If you want to pack an arsenal of different weapons, most of them will be of a low level...

That sums more or less the combat system. There is more, of course, but some of the niftier points, I will leave for you to experiment with when it comes out in English and you can enjoy it at your leisure.

Now then... Customization... Is it better? Yes. It's basically the same type as the last game, only with more options for faces, more haircuts, accessories and clothing of course.

One thing is that the models have been sliiiightly upgraded, yet it is visible. The textures are more colorful, probably due to the PSP's relatively colorless screen (if you compare it to a TV's, it pales), so the graphics look pretty and colorful.

Framerate in singleplayer is nice and constant. Not 60 FPS, of course, but it doesn't bother in the least. On multiplayer, however, it drops, but that's a given with many multiplayer games, especially with a system as "weak" like the PSP loading so many things, and believe me... this game loads things like crazy on a single screen.

The music? It's good, with some tunes sounding better than others, like usual with this particular series. Many are new, but many are also returning pieces from the last game. One of the stages in Moatoob HAS a PSO tune included, sounding like a sort of update, not arrangement. Most likely they just grabbed the music sheet and ran it in a newer program. It's the jungle/beach/mountain theme when you fight enemies from PSO Ep2, which was a nice touch, as the stage itself reminds me of the jungle area in particular (my favorite of that little set). I'm expecting more stuff to appear from PSO, since they showed stuff from an update to the forest stage from PSO too.

On the PSO topic, enemies like Boomas, which appeared in AoI reappear. Sand Rappies from PSO Ep4 make an appearance (dangerous little buggers), Evil Sharks, Pal Sharks, Poison Lillies and probably more will join in to gang bash you. Also, the opening movie shows the Dragon from PSO Ep1, so you can bet I'm expecting to get stepped on.

So, suming it up, this IS a HUGE upgrade to the series. It's more of the same with the returning things, but spiced by many new elements, especially the improvements made to the game system, which are definitely not trivial modifications. They change the way you play in a good way, but without turning this into a different game. This is Phantasy Star Universe at its core.

I will also be getting the US version when (and if) it comes out. I just hope it is not too long, and that they don't water it down by taking out the downloadable content which features in this one too, like they did with the first game.

Sega can still produce quality games, as evidenced by this title, and the good things I hear about PS Zero. If only I could say the same for Valkyria Chronicles 2, whose demo I just finished checking a while ago... That is one release I won't be getting its Japanese version of... And depending on what I hear, I may not get even the English one either... IF it comes out.

Oh...

If you were wondering why I mentioned nothing of the multiplayer, which is there, it's because I haven't even gone online with Adhoc Party to play with other people. And the internet mode, which is just like the PS2 version's online, seemingly demands me to obtain a license, which I will not do. No regular online for me for reasons I have talked about before.

Still, if you don't have a PSP, but enjoyed PSU, this IS what I could call a killer app for PSU suckers... like myself... A PSP may just have become worthy of your money... And I'm definitely getting a second one and two game discs of the US version if it comes out. One for me, another to lend to my brothers or friends.

Time to save more cash... I'm SO glad I don't use it for getting drunk like many do over here...

Oh, and... sorry for the chain of posts. My PC is in never, never land and I'm posting from a different apparatus.
