I don't consider PSIII canon as it's more of a gaiden than a sequel to the series.

All released Phantasy Star games are canon, whether you like it or not.

Both PSIII and PSIV are sequels to PSII. You can't call PSIII a side story because if PSIV never existed, it'd be the proper sequel to PSII instead of a non-important side game.

There is a possibility that PSIII was made as sequel to PSII and when developing PSIV was finally started the team chose to drop PSIII from the plot (at least much of it, since there still was world ships in the plot as PSIV tells us so). Why did they chose this was because multiple endings didn't fit the whole story very well.

Also the time loop thing actually messes the story much. Since if there's a time loop all the endings can be right... Infinite number of universes and so on... Blahblahblah.

I'm pretty much in agreement with Zucca. They used elements from III, such as cyborgs (retconned to androids in IV) and worldships, and made the story non canon. IV is officially the 3rd generation of the series.

What also bugs me is when fans at PSOW try to connect PSO and PSU to the original series. They are REBOOTS for heaven's sake.

As for the earthmen housing Dark Force, simple: Dark Force must've inluenced other galaxies to do its bidding. On earth, it's regarded as Satan, Beelzebub, etc, housed in some box sealed by some Greek heroes from a long distance past.

And this is why I like the English translation for a change, because it seems more like DF was created by the evil that the people of Earth had festering in them for so long and that their DF had no prior connection to other star systems. I prefer how the evil of the Earthmen is squarely blamed on their own errant behavior and disregard for their planet and not on some outside force that just happened to come along and turn them evil. The impact is much greater, in my opinion, because it forces us to see the potential evil we all harbor.
