The title's just a reflection of the style of the games — a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi. The word "phantasy" is a variant of "fantasy," and the word "star" is commonly used in sci-fi works. (See: Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.) And Phantasy Star was the first videogame — and perhaps even the first form of entertainment altogether — to really mix these two genres.
[Edit by Mizehrith on [TIME]1108083576[/TIME]]

I agree with Mizehrith. I mean, you're playing a fantasy. You can't really pick up a sword and go out and hack monsters and save the world. Also, more than just being a game in the Space genre, Phantasy Star takes place on multiple planets in the Algol Star System. So there's your Star right there. I think it makes you look at the bigger picture, not just thinking about saving the world, but saving all the planets around the Star Algo.

Indeed, and one can say the same thing about the Final Fantasy series. It definitely doesn't mention or even imply something final, since the series will never end.

It could technically be called "never ending fantasy"... not to be confused with the "neverending story"... but then the title wouldn't have that awesome alliteration. :D
... and I'll stop rambling now.

[Edit by Lamanai on [TIME]1108154753[/TIME]]

"Never Ending Fantasy" would be a very, very bad marketing name. I can just see myself in a store looking at Never Ending Fantasy and then thinking:
NEVER ENDING? There's no way I'm going to buy this game with a title like that. I'll probably die before I finish it.
hyperbole used of course to accentuate the point.

The quintessential "never-ending fantasy" was truly Gauntlet..... The lack of an ending (and later the impossibility of reaching the end on the console) still bothers me to this day.
Personally, I'm waiting for a Final Fantasy where the universe blows up. That would defined the title, in my opinion.
Phantasy Star is definitely the more appropriate title of the two.

What do you mean by "never ending fantasy"

Gauntlet in the arcades (the original 2D one from back in the 80s) had no ending. You could play and play and play and it never ended. It just tallied points. It truly was a never ending fantasy game. Then, when they brought it to the NES, they made it the most impossible game ever. For example, there is one room with 80 exits and only one takes you to the next level. All the others take you 2 to 20 levels back. And the exit is random, not fixed.

I got an idea... Algol is the star surrounded by three planets (two if you count Parma being destroyed) which makes the seal. So the Phantasy Star, Algol, is sealed.
In astronomy Algol means "demon's head," but is also called the Demon Star.
So wouldn't that mean the seal of the three (or two) planets sealed the Demon Star?
(please don't tell me that this is also posted somewhere else like before...) :(
