Phantasy Star III has the best soundtrack of any Phantasy Star game, and it's not particularly close in my opinion.

I like Phantasy Star III's music a lot too.

Especially the Laya Temple theme and the Lashute theme.

The game in my opinion has some of the best tracks in the entire series, but I don't think I'd go as far to say it has the best soundtrack as a whole. The dungeon and battle themes sort of make it an average total soundtrack, but the dynamics of the music are something that has rarely been replicated in the future (Skies of Arcadia did replicate the dynamic battle music that changed based on how good or bad the battle was looking).

If those 5 tracks were better or if there were a more variety of dungeon or battle musics, I would say that this game has the best soundtrack overall out of all four. I still think that PS4 has the best overall soundtrack, but IMO PS3 does beat out PS2 and PS1.

Well, the OST of PS3 is very uneven to me. Some tracks are great, such as the opening of course, but some other are just horrible or boring.

But the problem of PS3's musics in my opinion is not only such or such tracks, but how they used the Genesis as an instrument. Even with the melodies they offer, the Genesis can certainly do better. The way they use bells, chimes and organs is often too simplistic.

I prefer PS2's OST, which is more smooth and more consistent overall.
