Timeline Issue

Postby Shinuzzo » Sat Apr 28, 2018 7:03 pm

I was thinking about something in Phantasy Star , Alis and crew fought Dark Force in 342 AW. Rolf and crew fought Dark Force in 1284 AW. Chaz and crew fought Dark Force in 2284 AW. So did Rolf fighting Dark Force early reset the clock or what happens in 1342 AW? Does Algol get attack by a bunch of evil monsters but no Dark Force? Rykros would have also been close then too even if it was invisible.

I think they've retconned the original Phantasy Star to take place in AW 284. Why? Because Phantasy Star II's intro says it's been 1000 years since Alis and company defeated Lassic.

Both of you have forgotten to account for day light savings time.

It's probably due to translation issues and inconsistencies between versions. Those things are as relevant to Phantasy Star as laconia and the Aeroprism.

There's another factor too: We don't know when DarkForce first appears. It could have been around for quite a long time before we face it.

DarkForce seems to like to do things from the shadows and that can take a long time. So it could easily be hundreds of years old before Alis defeats it.

The Japanese version of Phantasy Star II says the same thing as the English one in this case, so it's not a translation inconsistency.

The Japanese and English versions didn't line up, though.

What do you mean? It says essentially the same thing in both, last I checked.

You're right. My mistake. It says "Space Century 342" as opposed to "AW 342"

Actually, they don't. In the intro, while the English version says "Over 1000 years", the Japanese version says "Approximately¹ 1000 years"... which works with the Japanese version of PSI since the gap between JPSI and JPSII is actually less than 1000 years.
PSEotM is the only game in the English series that gives us any sort of timeline.

1: The Japanese intro says 「およそ」 which translates to "Approximately" or "about"

It is because the seal that was around Palma, then broke, letting the Dark Falz out a few years early.
