So I downloaded an SRAM editor, but when I try to load my SRAM in, it tells me my file is in invalid format? anyone know of any save editors that work on modern machines?

The emulator and SRAM editor need to have the same file format for it to work. It's not about the hardware you have.

I'd guess some emulators can have it compressed. Although I don't see much benefit on changing the format (from raw) there's a possibility of incompatible formats.

Of course your best bet it a HEX editor. Not so much convenient, but works.
Some emulators do have a built-in SRAM editor also...
