Finally online!!!

I did come close to FSOD several times in the way you describe, but it never got to an actual FSOD in those situations. I just log off before either automatically or by myself.
To check how FSOD or disconnection is lurking:
-drop a box on the floor, doesn't matter what type
-try to pick it up
If you can't pick it up (bear in mind that usually there's slight lag), it's lurking. Log off.

Also if whatever you type doesn't appear in a speech bubble. That's what happened to me.
I have a new problem now; whenever I log in it tells me that there's a problem with my serial number and access code. There isn't, though, because I've played several times and haven't changed any settings. The Broadband Adapter still works fine, as I can browse the Sega website using it.
After the first message telling me that there's something wrong with my numbers, every new time I try to play online it just says "Line disconnected" every single time as soon as the lobby appears. I've tried to re-register with those numbers in case the servers "forgot" my registration but they said that there was already an account with those numbers (i.e. my account.)
Arghh! What's going on? I can't play PSO online at the moment because of this, and I ordered the Broadband Adapter from Canada just for PSO! >:(

Sometimes there's lag on just the speech bubbles, the rest of the game runs fine.

I have a new problem now; whenever I log in it tells me that there's a problem with my serial number and access code.

Call Sega.

I rang Sega Europe's helpline and it said "This service is currently under development". Hah! Nice to know they care. >,<
I've emailed them now - hopefully they've "developed" an email account and someone to operate it.

Their e-mail customer service is pretty good. They may not know everything, but they will always, and quickly reply to you.
