I've been reading this thread as it's gone on, and it's reminded me a lot of my highschool days, so I thought I'd chip in two cents even though I don't listen to metal anymore.
Back in the day, I wasn't a total metal head, but I liked bands like Metallica (older music), ZZ Top, Stabbing Westward, Romstein, and others. However, since then my music taste has drastically changed and now I don't even have any of myold metal albums, let alone listen to them. Man, it makes me feel like I'm aging threefold just typing this.

I've gotten into Demons and Wizards, and Anthrax (gods!) recently.
Plus, Dragonforce are about to release a new album on the 9th of January - and there will be a sexy release tour starting at the end of January.

That's strange -- I could have sworn I replied in this thread in '05. Maybe I'm thinking of an older one.

Anyway, I'm currently into:
- Symphony X
- Iron Maiden
- Kamelot
- Nightwish
- Children of Bodom
- Evergrey
- Sonata Arctica

...And a little Megadeth, Grave Digger, Metallica (old), Iced Earth, Helloween, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

That stuff rocks! Did you hear the newest one yet, for Brawl? Made me want that game even more.

Thought I did too.
There is too much to list for me, and a number of what I like has been posted already.

Man, I'm still into metal, but my tastes have changed somewhat. And unfortunately, there's some pretty awful bilge polluting the genre.
Anyway, as far as metal goes, I'm into...

Megadeth (Rust In Peace is probably one of the best speed metal albums ever recorded)
Iron Maiden (they're still a great band, nearly 30 years after their beginning)
Symphony X (the new album is excellent)
Dream Theater (perhaps one of the most musical progressive metal bands today)
Ayreon
Strapping Young Lad
The Devin Townsend Band
Immortal (pretty much the only black metal band I like)

I listen to a lot more than metal these days, but I still find time to listen to it, among other things.

Iv had to sell my Machinehead tickets. It was the Black Crusade tour too. Im really bummed as it was Trivium, Machinehead, Dragonforce, Shadows fall and Arch enemy.

Im missing the gig to go to a childhood friends wedding so its not all bad.

But yeah iv mainly been listening to:

Trivium - old stuff is best
Machinehead
Dream theater - Im loving the new album.

Man, the new Dream Theater album is excellent. Probably the best album they've recorded since Scenes From a Memory. It's heavy, but not as heavy and one-track as Train of Thought was (though, I liked ToT too). There's some variety, and definitely a lot of very well written songs.
