The Olympics

Postby Kienashe » Sat Aug 14, 2004 8:27 am

Right now I'm watching the opening ceremony, very inspiring. I'm lucky to be such a youth (14) and understand the value of the olympics. To have all those countries come together is a very inspiring event, as was/is the opening ceremony. Iraq is back in the olympics, and they beat portugol (Not spelled right.) in halftime. I'm suprised the U.S.A. got so much attention seeing how we are so envied/hated, or maybe we are the only ones that hate ourselves, that would make sense in my opinion.
I have a question about the olympics, how often is it held?

Every 4 years, but they alternate with the Winter Olympics. Thus in 2006 you can see the Winter Games and in 2008 the next Summer ones.

I thought one of the most inspiring things was, even though it is mostly a publicity stunt, that South and North Korea marched in together. I didn't think the song that Björk sang was one of her better though.

I didn't find that inspiring because it's obviously a publicity stunt. Puerto Rico is owned by the U.S.A right? I pretty sure I saw that in a school map.

Lots of "countries" in the Olympic games are actually protectorates, colonies, or possessions of other countries. You can see Hong Kong, Palau, Cook Islands, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico and French Guyana there competing under their own flags, but still they are not independent countries.
My sister carried the Olympic Torch when it came to Rio. It was quite something!

I don't much care for the Olympics. Being Canadian kinda puts me off, we have very few athletes in the Olympics, and they usually do quite well, but it's not worth watching 6 hours of TV to see one event with a Canadian only to have it shoved to the side by an American winning a gold medal ~_~. Only getting American brodcasts of the Olympics kinda makes it biased that way. Well, Canadian stations do show it, but most of the time they just feed off American brodcasts.
