Phantasy star sprits contribution

Postby Edless » Thu Apr 03, 2008 9:18 pm

Hello everybody,

I am making that topic in order to help the Phantasy star game creators in general.

Phantasy star has many cool characters but it definitly lacks icons and sprits diversity, so the idea of that topic is to take the sprites from PS and after having modified it post it here so that if a creator wants to make a game he could have lots of ressources to pick up from.

It's something very simple to do even for me (and I'm really no good at drawing.) Just photoshop a sprite and change its color (it takes about 20 minutes and I'm sure it'll go even faster once you get used to it) and then post it here

Like that (and also when he walks facing down north and East)
Image

I'll try to do that every time I get 20 minutes to wait (watching a TV show, waiting for the meal or such)
Well, what do you think of that? Anyone up for it?

I've just done the Gryz East it took me 3 minutes.

Image

Then why not doing the fighting sequences and if we have some artist we could even remake the sprites for new ennemies.

I'm all for it and will probably have something to contribute pretty soon (as in a week or less). However, I have to say, the best 16bit sprites I've seen are the 1st set of sprites Missagh has for his PS-V

I haven't seen a sprite that matches my PSO toon, so I'll probably submit one of her from his style.

Well, I tried to mod Seth,

I thought he could have a green suit like Pike (Gryz) so here is what I made thanks to those who captured the sprites before me.

Convertions like that are easy. You can do that in Paint even quicker. Try putting some different clothes or accessories on him.

Of course it is easy, that's why everyone should try changing the sprite colors so that we could see some different NPC.

I was thinking about that after having played Raja's adventure a game I thought to be great, but I was also thinking that I've had seen already every sprites in the game and it lacked something new.

If people like me start changing the colors, they might end up mastering photoshop and little by little try to change accessories and such.

That could be fun if everyone went photoshoping everything in Phantasy star

You forget that PhotoShop costs an arm and a leg. Most people who own it do so illegally.

Whats wrong with owning a pirated copy of Photoshop?

Most of us use ROMS, so technically...

Please @_@ for the sake of god, never, NEVAH! save sprites or any kind of sprite art in jpeg, they compress the image and don't save the lines or keep the pixels right, it reduces the quality and make them unusable for any purpose since the colors are not solid anymore. Keep them in .bmp or save them in .gif or .png (png is better since it saves all the information and kepts quality better). Just take a look on what happens when you save non-raster (such as pixel art or vector art) images in jpeg:

If you have those sprite sheets saved in your pc in bmp, please save them again in gif or png, otherwise they become useless @_@...

Now, on the sprite itself, nice job, though sprites outside of battle kinda reminds me of Rock Lee.

Edit: Argh! My grammar betrayed me for a moment!

Photoshop is an expensive program that is still sold today and important to a lot of people. Pirating it is illegal, and is akin to stealing a copy without breaking windows and without the box.

The difference with ROMs (of Mega Drive games, Game Boy, etc., but NOT Game Boy Advance and DS) is that those are games from many years ago that are no longer sold. Despite that, I still encourage finding a copy somewhere, but still.

If you made a program and sold it, would you like the whole world to copy it without receiving compensation for your hard work? I think not.

The only reason i have pirated software on my PC is either 1)i can not find it anymore or 2)It costs way too much IE PhotoShop, i have an old version of it, but Gimp is a bit of a pain to work with for me.

At first i was unsure what this thread was about but i see now, it's about making custom graphics from old graphics for use in fan games.

Since what has been posted so far is more or less for RM2k and 2K3, i can not use it unless i blow them up twice their size and do some heavy editing of my own on them.

Oh and that about roms of games not being available is actualy not true anymore, i have a Wii and i can pay to own a lot of old games you "can't find anymore", and as time goes on.. more and more classic games will be on the Wii virtual consol for download... so.. that excuse no longer works for anyone anymore, lol.

That is not to say i do not own any illegal copys of things.. but i will eventualy buy them again on the Wii VC, besides.. their is nothing like playing a classic consol game on an actual consol on your TV.

Ok, there I went for an Alis Mod.

If we have an artist for faces pics could turn out nicely I think.

I know there are still many details that don't fit but I'm sure I'll find a way to improve myself and maybe in the end draw some original personnages.

Out of ten pictures, we might get one we could use.

I wish we could make a PS with those pics Image on the PScave board. Too bad there aren't just tons of those...

Ps

Indeed there is a big difference between jpg and png...

By the way, what was PSIV's chara design Naoto Oshima was it? If we were to get some of his illustration and design, it could get handy.
Does anyone have a link to see his work?

Now those are some decent mods. I'm quite impressed. Wish I had my Megaband Mod to showoff. I thought it was hilarious. Eh, maybe I'll just make another.
