Also there's customized Conky system monitor, transparent urxvt -terminal and Gens/GS r7 which is running Sonic 1 Megamix.

If you want to test FluxBox easily I'd suggest you to test FluxBuntu or Arch Linux and install FluxBox in it.

I changed to LXDE which uses OpenBox as its wm.

I'm curerntly trying to replace openbox window manager with Compiz.
Although I can use some compositing effects with openbox those all are just eye candy. :|
Compiz has "effects" that really makes desktop environment more user-friendly.

Am I the only one here with a basic windows desktop, with things I use as big icons dotted around my screen, a background and a toolbar at the bottom? I mean surely this layout is much simpler and makes more sense? I mean do you really need all of those numbers and text everywhere? How do you do anything?

That would confuse me too much :L
