In other news, anyone seen the new Sony NGP (Next Gen Portable), a HD handheld with 2 analogue sticks finally, with a touch-screen and touch-pad, looks pricey but nice. This or the 3DS though, what do you think will be better?

Are sony advancing technology pushing boundaries and limitations for game develepors, while nintendo run off gimmicky products, with no real advances? Or is the DS series just more fun to have? Personally, my iPod is my portable gaming device right now, so I hope one of these new consoles are good. The 3DS's main problem to me is the 4 hour battery life, anyway - What are you guys thoughts.... On all of the above :L

I did see the new handheld. Maybe it was because I recently bought a PS3, but I was kind of excited for it.

The thing that is going to matter is who has the better game support. This is one of the reasons why the DS crushed the PSP. The 3DS might have a weak launch, but the line-up sure looks strong through the summer. Resident Evil, Super Street Fighter 4, Metal Gear Solid 3, Ocarina of Time/Starfox 64 remakes, Kid Icarus. That is a powerful line-up. Think about Super Street Fighter 4 for a second. That is a current generation game that has not been watered down, with a more robust online mode than consoles, in 3D without glasses. Holy Crap.

Semix, you should be worried about the NGP's battery life. That thing is so powerful that they are going to need an extremely advanced battery to keep it alive for 4 hours.

Also, the price. The whole movie industry is really trying to push 3D. So is the public going to want 3D for $250 or 2D for $400? I fear that Sony is making the same mistake as before. Trying to push something that is technically powerful at a huge price with few big name games to back it up. Without games all they are doing is selling a small PS3 for $100 more. I know you are a hardcore pad gamer, but you can't let the industry fool you. This motion and touch stuff is not a gimmick if the developers take it seriously. Personally, I am glad to have a PS3 and a Wii/DS. I can never run out of fun, unique experiences having this combo.

I actually have a wii, PSP, DSi, and PS3 move, and the wii has been untouched for over a year for me. PSP is the same, and DSi I don't use anymore either, only the PS3, and only really use the move in heavy rain. To be honest, my iPod is better than my 2 portables right now

I'm not liking the 3DS or the Sony NGP.

The 3DS is an expensive handheld that only brings more eye candy to the table. I don't care about 3D without glasses; I care about creative gameplay. The game line-up isn't impressing me either. A lot of the games are ports and sequels of tired franchises.

As for the Sony NGP... I don't know that much about it. It's likely to be so powerful to be very expensive with a short battery life. The touch screen on the back sounds like a bad idea.

The DS is likely to be the biggest competitor to both newcomers.

I still want an iPhone 4, the apple app store has most games on it now anyway, for example GTA chinatown wars, a full game that's on PSP and DS. Plus it can be used for more as a whole, whether asking for a new console for this christmas or not is something I can't decide as of now...

Nintendo knows how to sell to the mass public now. That's why I said people will take 3D over 2D. It can easily be marketed as the next best thing. The price is an interesting one. It is $100 more expensive than the original DS was in 2004. However, you need to think about the world we live in now. Handheld devices are skyrocketing in popularity. Their prices are therefore very premium. I don't think it is worth $250 either but that is just the world we live in now. Cell phones are the most expensive devices we carry around with us. And for what? Cordless phones aren't exactly new technology anymore. However, people still pay huge sums of money just to have a popular phone. You may not agree with the price but that doesn't change the fact that it will sell. You know that :)

Oh, and, you are entitled to your opinion on videogames. I however strongly disagree with you. Just sayin'

I don't pay huge sums of money for a cell phone. Mine cost around 20 or 30 dollars. I also dislike Apple for its assholish practice of selling you an overpriced piece of junk only to release a more powerful one the following year. I do NOT like Apple.

As for portable gaming, I enjoy my PSP greatly. I'm supposedly going to get a DS in the following days, which will be the huge, bulky one. Not like I mind the old technology...

Regarding the 3DS, I was initially interested in it. However, my interest fell to the bottom of the Earth once I heard it will be region locked. That's no good for an importer like me. The NGP seems interesting for me because I see it as the continuation of what I can enjoy on the PSP. Add to that a certain fact that a few franchises I like are in Sony platforms, and well... No reason to say no...

If the NGP is backwards compatible, then I will start buying more PSP games on the PSN and saving them to use them with that portable.

And here I come back, because I feel like ranting... =P

The reason I dislike the iWhatever Apple churns out is because of the prohibitive price they tag their stuff with. For around the same price, or sometimes lower, I have gotten devices with the same function or even more. The best example so far is the PSP. In entertainment, which is what it is supposed to be used for, not school related things.

The PSP allows for the playing of videos, music, games, photos, porn browsing... I mean, INTERNET browsing, using it as a USB drive for memory sticks and some other functions like RSS updates on podcasts, etc... Several of the iWhatever do the same, yes, but I don't remember the memory storage of those devices to be upgradeable.

I don't remember the game franchises I love being there either.

But what I like about the PSP more than all, is that it is a fixed hardware. I don't have to buy ANOTHER iPhone to play the newer games. My PSP is from late 2007. I've had it for nearly THREE YEARS...

I just bought two new games for it, and it's still the same outdated, but fun hardware.

If I get that DS I was offered today, it will be a DS from who knows when... But I will still enjoy it.

In this era where there are LOTS of cool gadgets floating around, it's easy to go "OoooooOOOOOOOOooooohh!!!", but really, are we PAYING too much for those?

Disclaimer: It's not my intention to put down anyone who likes Apple (like Semix). This is my personal take on the matter, since I'm a REAL cheapskate when buying consoles... Same reason why I'm still waiting and watching to assess how many 360s of the new model burn to death before considering buying one... After all, my two dumbass brothers have had FOUR OF THOSE.

Now, the matter of the NGP... It interests me for several reasons, actually. The first one being that there is a possibility that PSP games will run in it. The frontal touch screen is a nice addition, yes, but not one I really think I need. I won't complain about it, though. An extra feature is always welcome. Another one is that there are TWO analog sticks in it this time, something sorely needed in the original PSP. An interesting thing is the possible connectivity between the NGPand PS3. The PSP has some of it, but it's mostly useless for me... I'd like to use the NGP as a screen for the PS3... =P

Now, I have heard that the thing is supposed to be connected to the cellphone network through 3G connection. To this, I say "FRAK IT". I don't want to be available all the time. Taking into account cellphone fees and stuff, that part sounds like a bad deal to me. If it does include a wi-fi feature, then I'm happy with that. Otherwise, no way in hell I'm going online with it. EVER.

Correction: smartphones are skyrocketing in popularity. People are interested in phones that can do a lot more than just call. The 3DS, however, is not a smartphone. It's primarily a handheld gaming device.

Honestly, I like the iPod (or at least having one) because they are so multifunctional, easy to use and simple, while being somewhat of a fashion statement. I don't exactly WANT to like it though, and apple as a company do annoy me, my old 2nd generation touch is now out of date, the new one is faster, slimmer and most importantly has a camera, now other people are getting them, I feel outdated but I don't want to pay tons for what is essentially a small upgrade

No, they aren't tired franchises. Not in my eyes anyway. The first game I buy for the 3DS probably will be Ocarina of Time.

Correction: smartphones are skyrocketing in popularity. People are interested in phones that can do a lot more than just call. The 3DS, however, is not a smartphone. It's primarily a handheld gaming device.

Small expensive devices have been the big thing since Apple released the ipod (another example of really expensive handheld technology). Perhaps handheld is the wrong term. Maybe cordless is a better way of putting it. I didn't expect the ipad to be popular, but it is. So it seems size isn't a very constricting factor either. The NGP is huge compared to the 3DS, but it probably wont matter.

You also have to remember that a big portion of the population don't spend time reading about technology on the internet. Many purchases will be made based on advertisement. Nintendo has a small, cordless device that can advertise something no other small, cordless device can offer.

I'm skeptical to. I wont be buying either on release day. Maybe once the first upgraded edition comes out. I want to wait and see how the market reacts, which one gets more support, and maybe a price drop.

EDIT: I've realized two things now. First, we are both speaking from different cultural backgrounds and markets. It very well could be that things are much different on your side of the world. Excuse me if I am incorrect in that context. Second, this topic has completely derailed a perfectly good thread. I will recreate a new thread to prevent injuring this one.

Well... If you tell me about fashion statements...

I'm the guy who wears t-shirts with nothing painted on them, baseball caps without a team's emblem embroidered on them and walks with an MP3 player from the time they still ran on one AAA battery...

Well, I do wear my green hoodie with the logo of an astronomic observatory when it gets cold...

I also wear glasses... =P
