Yet Another fan game?!?!

Postby crighton35 » Sat Oct 04, 2014 9:22 am

Hiya all,

Been shadowing this board for many years, mainly because I forgot my password and was to lazy to retrieve it. But alas that time has passed.

I'm here now for a new reason.

I have over the past 4 weeks been making a "modable" phantasy star version 2 from scratch.(after work and weekends mostly)

now I have only just got some items running at the moment, but most of the stuff is in there as place holders.
So I thought it was time to release a working demo and gauge the users response.

Soon I will also be asking for help building maps of towns and dungeons etc.....
The game comes with its own map editor, and as for the media, well its all external and changeable.
Soon I will be making the entire engine completely modable, after I get all the basics running flawlessly.

In this demo the map editor is disabled and you start directly in test mode.

Scenario:
You start in pasoe on motivia as you know, and you have your main first four characters Rolf, Nei, Rudo and Amy.
you will only see nei on the map (who wants to look at guys? )
you control her with you left mouse button.
all controls are right and left mouse button.
left = select, choose, move
right= deselect, exit, and open/close wandermenu
sounds complicated, but its really not once you try it.
So far only a couple of menu functions work(if you choose a menu item and you cannot do any thing, just right click until you can)
but equipping, purchasing and reviving is totally functioning.

now, I'm no artist or musician, so obviously the graphics and sound have come from both the new PSG2 and the original ps2, but I would love someone to be able to help with this later if your interested.

At the moment you cannot leave town, but all enterable buildings can be entered.

there is no battle system yet, I have made many in the past for my own pleasure (shhhh), so it will not take long to incorporate after the basics are finished.
The hospital is next on my todo list, so at this stage it is not working, just enterable.

Now remember, I said a lot of things are place holders while I get them running, so be gentle with your critique LOL, I bruise easily.

I was going to do screen shots, but we all know what the game looks like, so I'll just give the link instead, your welcome to post screen shots at will.
http://www.filedropper.com/psg2
its a zip file, just (scan first as always) then extract anywhere with dir structure intact. file is roughly 8.67 meg

Please let me know what you think of this small demo, and of course, any bugs you may encounter.

Cheers
Crighton

PS. If the link doesn't work, please let me know a better file storage place.

I gave it a quick whirl. Bought some weapons and equipped them. So it looks like you've got things working. :) The game runs really slow, though (except for the music). I don't think it's intentional because my CPU spikes at 100% usage the entire time the program is running.

Hmmmm
I don't know why your getting 100% usage or slowdowns.
on 2 different computers ive tested it, max usage is 20% and that's with other programs running in the back ground.

but thanks for the feedback, I will try and solve your issue.

The good:
Paseo looks great :)
Nei looks great too.
The sound is fantastic.

The Bad:
Nei moves very slowly and seems to not want to move at all.
Nei seems unable to go inside her house and stops just ouside the door and wont go further.
I can open the status menu with "m" but no other key seems to do anything at all. I also cant close the menu.

So all in all it looks great. Keep up the good work.

thanks DarkMyau,

but let me gauge your movement, are you referring to moving in the new psg2 or the old, I'm recreating the older style play.
If only I could see what both posts were moving like, then I could tell if its a bug or intentional.

The controls are left and right mouse button only, any keyboard buttons are purely accidental and removed in the next release.(bug finding helps with shortcuts)
if you get stuck in the menu, just click right mouse button until it exits. its intentional as well, because of the structures I have made.

thanks for the reply.
Hospital and data memory working.

Just a side note, the map editor is disabled, but can be accessed by pressing "e", its almost all keyboard commands, to many to mention now, because I'm too tired.
its hit and miss if it works for you, I have it set to only work in curtain conditions.

Nei's movement is tile based, if the mouse is far enough away, she will decide which direction is best and walk 1 tile in that direction.
if its agreed by all, I can make it more like the psg2 walk style, or maybe an option for 1 or the other, but for now its old school.
:)

Keep the feedback coming

cheers
:)

Forgot to ask what system you both are using.
the game is being written in the latest DBpro, and on a quad core laptop.

I have a CORE i5 laptop.

Yes I know its old lol.

Game works much better with the mouse. But Nei needs to walk a bit faster in my opinion.

I bought and equipped a few items and it works great.

I was hoping to have the next demo done by tonight, but work and social life interfere LOL
But as an update to any followers.....
all objectives are progressing alone nicely.

hopefully by next week end there will be total freedom as area transition will be working.
currently building tiles and map for overworld and 2nd town.

Keep your dials tuned in.
oh
PS. as part of the modable experience, there is a new file in the map dir, it controls walk speed, now you can set it yourself from 1=normal, 2,3,4=superman or in Nei's case superwoman.
:P
or just hitting up and down arrow increase or decrease walk speed.

If you're remaking all the maps from Phantasy Star Generations 2, I've all of them ripped in Tiled format.

Yes, I have more or less all of that.

In case you don't know, you'll find almost all the graphics ressources of the game here.

For the remaining ressources (party's sprites, ennemy animations, maps), I've cracked most of them and have python scripts to generate them from properly decompressed files. For the moment I'm a little busy, but I'll make them available.
