An OST inspired by Phantasy Star II

Postby Mi-chael » Sat Nov 29, 2014 2:58 pm

As said in my introduction thread, I'm big on music and Tokuhiko Uwabo had a big influence. So, I present to you 27 tracks inspired by Phantasy Star II, as something of a tribute.

Feedback is welcome.

Parma Ham, SoundCloud automatically processes the tracks using some sort of compressor, for reasons unknown to me. Track #7 was actually one of the first tracks I ever completed, several years ago. Since I don't have the track at hand for reference, I cannot pinpoint the specific sound, but it's probably just some atmospheric sound. As for the clipping, there should be no clipping, but again, I don't know what the deal is with SoundCloud. It wouldn't surprise me if the compressor algorithm were causing some of the high-end peaks to jump above +0dB. Note that I didn't use the Sega Genesis sound chip for these, so you're obviously not hearing the same sounds used by Bo, but I could readily do that in the future.

Thanks for your honest appraisal.

This is actually quality stuff. I like most of the tracks, currently on Dezo...

Missagh, thanks. Glad you like it. DL anything you want.

Parma Ham, I've used some Genesis soundfonts before, as you can hear for yourself.

As far as utilizing the actual YM2612 sound chip, I've never done that before, so it's something that would have to be looked into. However, if the process could utilize MIDI in some fashion, that would expedite the learning process for sure because then it becomes a conversion process, as opposed to a programming one.

I hear ya. Bo's originals are perfect the way they are, so there's really no need for me to expound upon what's already set in stone.

OK, here's a song I composed last night, including a Sega Genesis version. This time I was sure to upload to SoundCloud using 24-bit, 48,000Hz files and a ceiling of -5dB, so you can discern whether it made a difference in clarity.

Thanks again. Yes, I can compose fast, as is necessary. I'm just using TuxGuitar (freeware, in case you're wondering).
