Do you guys want a PDF of the Phantasy Star Compendium?

Postby orakio_rob » Sun Sep 21, 2008 11:05 am

Well, here it is!
http://gazetadealgol.com.br/downloads/index.php

I assume you don't know portuguese, so here is an easier link:

Now, on to the strory...

I'm Orakio Rob, a Brazilian Phantasy Star fan. I've been running the website "A Gazeta de Algol" (www.gazetadealgol.com.br) for about seven years. As many of you, I've always wanted to grab a copy of the Compendium, but it was quite hard to find. The worst part is that the few people I know who own the book are scared to scan it, fearing that the book would be ruined in the proccess.

Well, I've managed to find the Compendium for sale at the Japanese Amazon. So, me and a few (9) friends from the Brazilian Phantasy Star community decided to buy it. Each of us payed US$ 10. I've bought the book with my credit card and took the pages off (yes, I've basically destroyed the book) in order to scan it properly.

Now, one of us lucky guys will own what's left of the book (based on the next lottery result). But we are really in it because of the PDF. All of the guys who took part in it did it so we could make the PDF and make it available to all PS fans. So, consider it a gift from the Brazilian Phantasy Star community. Enjoy it!

If you want to make the Compendium available at your website, I would really appreciate if you could add a note such as "This book was scanned by Orakio Rob, from a Gazeta de Algol (www.gazetadealgol.com.br) and his friends from the Brazilian Phantasy Star community." I was the one who came up with the idea, but we had a few problems along the way (Amazon jp wouldn't ship outside Japan, so one of the participants had a friend in Japan, who got the book and then sent it to me), so it really wouldn't be possible without the help and encouragement from the guys from the Brazilian community.

The PDF is about 50MB in size. I plan on uploading a package with the hi-res images so everyboy can play Dr. Frankenstein with the book. Hope you like it!

Thanks! It's nice to finally see the entire thing. There's a lot of stuff in there that's been exceptionally difficult or outright impossible to find online.

Awesome! Thanks! There are a bunch of pictures in there that I've never seen before.

...This is low-res? Wow, I wonder how big the high-res version will be, as this is quite big already. :O

Well, I've scanned the Compendium under Linux, using a command line program called scanimage. By default is scans files to the PNM format, which applies no compression at all, so I've ended up with about 700MB in images...

Then I've converted the PNM files to JPG using imagemagick. I've reduced the quality and ended up with about 50MB. I think the quality is quite good, but if you look closely, when there is a white background and some colored stuff in front of it, the edges of the colored images are a bit blurry...

As I'm quite satisfied with the 50MB version, now I'll focus on making packages of the images at a better quality, so you all can make your own versions of the Compendium and edit the images the way you see fit.

I'm glad you've liked it! I've spent years wishing I could see the Compendium, and I'm quite happy now that we all have the PDF. By the way, the PSII Hintbook is also available as a PDF, a friend of mine found the scan, but I don't really know who did scan it. You can find it here:

This is positively the coolest thing to happen in the community since Rebecca's translation of the book!

Muito obrigado Rob!

I have seen a number of the picture in the early part of the book due to Maxlow's site. But, yeah, there is a lot of stuff that I have not seen either.

I've just uploaded the packages containing the hi-res jpg images. You'll find them here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/64738206/16 ... d=cf74173f
http://www.4shared.com/file/64738195/5c ... d=cf74173f

Or you can check the main folder here:
http://www.4shared.com/dir/8718825/866c ... aring.html

The whole thing is almost 400MB in size, so I've uploaded the pics in five separate packages, each about 80MB in size. Hope you'll like it!

It's crossed my mind before, but when looking through this book, it really makes me notice how much unexplored backstory there is for a lot of the characters, especially in PSIV. The storyboard/sketch section contains drawings of a younger Chaz, a middle-aged Rika (13yo is probably middle-aged in Numan years) with her son, 15yo Rune, 14yo Alys, Zio's deformed right hand (which is always concealed in the game itself), and various characters in either formal garb or everyday wear.

Part of the reason that Alys' untimely death was so powerful was because she really seemed like the main character up until that point in the story, not just the female lead like Nei in PSII or Aeris in FFVII, and more like the star character of the game than simply a mentor for Chaz. She always calls the shots, she's almost always the dominant personality in cutscenes and conversations, her name is an almost exact match with that of PSI's lead character (even though that's only due to the localization), and there's this long history between her and Rune that you expect to learn about at some point but never do because she kicks the bucket early. Seeing some of these sketches makes me wonder how much of that stuff was set in stone in official media in one form or another.

Speaking of the Compendium translation, I never noticed this little statement before:

Tsugawa: Yeah, I remember. The idea was that Lutz would finally get a starring role, since Alisa and her companions would have died generations ago; the heroine would have lost her memory at the start of the game, but would eventually remember that she was a follower of the Great Light called Neta, and she'd go on a journey with the fourteenth generation Lutz.

Makes me wonder how they would have expanded on that story idea and what other stories the team could have come up with if more games had been produced for the Original Series...
