Items

A great many items were never shown on-screen in the game. In the settei sheets, however, they are drawn in detail. We present them in this section.

Picture Captions:

[Perolymate]
Perolymate, a source of replenishment for your physical strength. Without this, you would've been quite helpless on the adventure!
[vials]
The liquid in the vials is Ruoginin. If you drink it, life force will well up within you.
[shields]
These shields are necessary for their defensive power. The shield on the left, by the way, is made of Laconia.
[guns]
Firearms that only Tyrone can use. It seems that a lot of handgun-type weapons were drawn in the designs.
[swords]
Illustration of the swords that Alisa uses in the adventure. They all seem to be extremely sharp!
[Hapsby]
Hapsby. You only see him head-on when he appears on the screen, but here is how he looks from the side view.
[Magic Hat]
Headgear(?)-type items. Is the Magic Hat made of hide...or metal?
[keys]
Keys are a big help in the dungeons. The handles are stylishly designed.
[claws]
Tusk and claw attack items equipped by Myau. The nails on all of them look quite painful.
[axes]
Designs of powerful-looking axes. One would think Tyrone quite dependable and fearsome when wielding these weapons.
[wands]
Lutz's mysterious Psycho-Wand, holding an ice crystal in its tip.

Vehicles [actually, "boarding items", but - eh, whatcha gonna do...]

These machines will grant you passage to places you can't go to on foot. They were shown only from the top on-screen; you can appreciate them from many different angles here.

Picture Captions:

[Hovercraft]
The Flow Mover, a vehicle that can cross water with the large fan in back and jet propulsion mechanisms on both sides. Its aerodynamic curves are beautiful.
[Land Rover]
The Land Master, which can speed overland with its six huge tires. The design really got across the bulk of its heavy armor, impenetrable even by lava.
[Ice Digger]
The Ice Digger, which can shatter glaciers with the two drills in front. It seems quite powerful.

PHANTASY STAR II

Phantasy Star II & Text Adventures

Out of all the original pictures from which the graphics were based and produced, hardly any roughs supposedly still exist, except for the ones shown here.

Eusis

The moodiest character - probably because Yoshida-shi changes the way he draws his male characters so much.

Picture Captions & Text: [Note: As with all the settei, the captions are translated from right to left as they appear on the page.]

[Eusis in battle armor]
Eusis drawn after the completion of II. The design details of his clothing and such seem finalized. One is impressed by his maturity. [As in the game, the settei says that Eusis has a blue suit, silver armor, and black fingerless gloves.]
[smaller Eusis in battle armor]
Another one of the better old roughs from production days. Now, it seems quite different.
[Eusis in street clothes]
Another text adventure piece. Eusis is about 17 years old here. His daunting proportions are so cool! [Eusis's shirt is white; his pants are dark blue.]
[close-up of Eusis in street clothes]
A piece drawn for use in the text adventure. Did his early days foreshadow how manly he eventually would become?
[close-up of child Eusis]
A text adventure childhood design. [Can't translate this next snippet - something about the look young Eusis has on his face.]

Nei

In the early sketches, Nei is depicted as having very prominent feline characteristics. Her gentle expression is better done in the later sketches, but it's tough to throw the early ones away.

Picture Captions and Text:

[cat-like Nei slashing and had shot of angry Nei]
The oldest rough sketches. Her clothing and expression have changed, but the Nei of the old days is not without charm.
[large torso pic of Nei]
A kurokkii [?? it's in katakana] from game production. The expression differs from the other picture, probably because this one was drawn more freely.
[portrait of Nei]
A design used in the text adventure. Do you see the progression from the early designs to the refined ones?
[li'l Nei in cloak]
Nei, when she led a nomadic lifestyle. Her hair is tousled, and the clothes she wears are made of ragged cloth.

Anne Saga

This self-sacrificing female doctor's features are easily distinguishable and seem to have been settled upon fairly early on. She has changed little from the outset.

Picture Captions and Text:

[head shot of Anne]
A sketch drawn in PSII post-production. At this point in time, she doesn't have her hair bobbed.
[large rough head sketch of Anne]
A very early sketch drawn at the time of PSII. Isn't her detailed expression kind of cute?
[guy]
Heinz. Someone who appeared in the text adventure. Sub-character settei are comparatively rare.
[head shot of Dr. Anne]
Settei from the text adventure. Her round eyes reflect her mellow, gentle character.
[full body shot]
A full-body settei from her text adventure. The white coat suits the chara well. [Anne has a white coat (with an ID card and silver wristbands (more like above-the-elbowbands)),a pinkish-purple leotard and boots whose toe-tips come off (why?).]
[Anne with cloak]
A settei of Anne outside wearing a mantle. Anne's settei often seem to have delicate expressions.

Amia Amirski

As Yoshibon-shi's character design changed, her expression changed as well. She is still a moody character in the game.

Picture Captions and Text:

[full body shot]
Text adventure full-body settei. Her expression here is gentle. This design seems to be the model for Lyla. [Indeed, the outfit is extremely similar to Lyla's; it has silver epaulettes, a black shirt and pants under her red tunic, and red boots and gloves. (Amia's hair is shorter than it is in PSII.)]
[comparison of Amia's hairstyles]
At left is its length about the time of the text adventure. Below is her hair length at the time of PSII. I wonder if it's better longer?
[large head shot]
The cool expression works rather well.
[small head shot]
PSII post-production sketch. Her cool expression is appealing.

Huey Reane

Huey's sketches are all from the text adventure. His settei from II don't seem to be down on paper.

Picture Captions and Text:

[SD Huey in lab coat sneaking around]
A frightened SD Huey. Rudger and Kainz don't have settei. It sure looks like we aren't going to be blessed by the presence of any men.
[head shot]
Huey posing for his female fans (do any exist?).
[Huey in Hahn-like lab coat]
From looking at this settei, you'd think that Hahn was born from Huey. [Huey's coat is identical to Hahn's, save for the silver wristbands. Just for the record, the large, captionless picture of Huey in street clothes shows him wearing a green turtleneck, a pale red jacket, and white pants.]
[from no picture in particular]
A side note from Yoshibon-shi - he was raised in a middle-class home.

Shilka Levinia

The game really misunderstood her work clothes, which of course are designed in the settei here. The skimpy dress is so like Shilka.

Picture Captions and Text:

[SD Shilka in long dress]
Her everyday, at-home clothes look like this.
[full body shot]
Shilka is the only daughter of the first- or second-wealthiest man on Motabia. She seems to have taken to stealing as a backlash against her constrained lifestyle. [Shilka is wearing a short light purple dress with a wide white (low-cut) collar and red ribbon.]
[manga collage]
An illustration of the whole party all together. The assorted expressions and gestures show us another side to them that's nice to see.

Neifirst

Neifirst's outward appearance was barely understood in the game, but, through Yoshibon-shi's ideas, she is drawn here in all her different moods.

Picture Captions and Text:

[leotard Neifirst]
First with a rather grim expression. [Note: Neifirst is "Neifirst" in the PSII World Guide and "Nei First" here. ::shrug::] It's interesting that her outfit is asymmetrical. Note the mark on her face in this picture. [Yeah, what's up with that mark? It's similar to the one that Nei in the center of her outfit on the fold-out poster, which in turn is identical to the mark/pin Rune has on his collar - not to mention the tattoo NM-2011 has on her chest. Hmmm....]
[the Neis duel]
A showdown scene between the fellow Neis. The contrast between Nei's simple costume and First's intricately designed clothing is interesting.
[head sketch]
Could there be only one rough sketch of her in armor? The lines are natural. Is the expression better than the ones in the other pictures?
[dark Neifirst]
The final version of First. Her clothing looks armored, and it's carried off rather well. I'd like to know how she was supposed to be colored.

Monsters

The monsters came off well on-screen, but it's interesting to see them drawn at other, unexpected angles.

Picture Captions and Text:

[Da Kemal Rah [Fiend/Xe-A-Thoul]]
The Da Kemal Rah design, a fan favorite due to its air of mystery. The detail of its head carried over well.
[Wirehead]
Cords and pipes run like plant roots to its face. It was a gun-turret type of mecha.
[Mizgamma]
Mizoranganma. It looks quite different than it does on-screen. It seems like a mecha-scorpion.
[Imagiomage/Chaos Sorceror]
Chaos Sorceror, a popular monster who also appears in the fourth installment. His look has barely changed from the first volume.
[Van]
Van. If you look at the Van from this angle, you can see its shape more clearly. There are four small vulcans in its lower half. On-screen, it looked almost like a crayfish with crab-like claws.
[Igglanova-type critters]
Monsters that appear in Huey's adventure. They don't appear in II. The monsters have a close resemblance to some that appeared in Millennium.
[Hungry Ape [Orangoo]]
Attack of the Hungry Ape. His face, well-drawn even on the game screen, is a little scary, isn't it?

Character Design - Yoshibon

So it's been eight years already? I'm sorry, but I really don't have any deep thoughts on my designs. I had no idea that something I got involved with eight years ago would become my career.
