Giant Robots... You KNEW I was going make such a topic...

...sooner or later.

Well, if you like science fiction anime, chances are you know of the difference between the two classes of giant robots:

Real Robots: Giant robots that in universe are mere machines, usually mass produced or whose design history is either explained in the show or outside of it in supplementary materials. They have limited ammo and their powerplant is more or less explained with in-universe science and unintelligible "technobabble".

Exponents for such shows are the Macross series, Gundam series, among many, many others.

Super Robots on the other hand, are their predecessors and explanation about their powerplant and many other things is generally nonexistent and actually nobody cares. Their design is usually bordering on the ridiculous just to look cool and other marked characteristics. Nonetheless, they are great fun.

Examples of this class are Mazinger Z, one of the stories that helped popularize the genre (and from way before I was born, yet I watched it as a kid!), among many others.

I would like to introduce you to the fun of these two genres in case you don't know them with a few shows that maybe you would like to watch in an uneventful evening or a night with nothing to do.

No Code Geass or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? I'm disappointed, WING-0.

....though keep in mind, I love your recommendations.

No Zoids or BIG O either? Well, BIG O was kinda too noir-y for my tastes.

Oy, I liked Big-O! The noir tasted mysterious and grim!

Zoids....eh, which season? I liked the first season they dubbed, with the Liger 0, mostly because of the mercenary with the Shadow Fox.

Well BIG O's noir is fine. I guess it didn't hit me as hard because I watched it after playing Max Payne. After that, nothing seems noir. Max Payne is HYPER Noir.

As for Zoids, the only seasons I saw were the one you mentioned and the one where in the opening they just say: "ZOIDS!" over and over again. I think both were on Toonami.

Aren't those the same?

Played Max Payne. I still have the save file, but I couldn't get past the second drug fever dream. Couldn't bloody see where I was supposed to land. Hm, thinking of, I need a new memory card.

Haha, well, the two Zoids I saw were the one where the Zoids were like some sort of tournament game, then the one were it was more they were war weapons or something.

Wiki tells me that the one I saw was New Century Zero, and the war one you saw was Chaotic Century. I may go hunting for subs to check it out. Always love a good mecha war anime.

Well it's gotta be better than FFX's story. >.>

"I'm a ghost from a dream who's supposed to fight my father who's turned into Satan!"

.....baby's first RPG isn't something I want to think about. That's when Final Fantasy started going down hill.

I'm surprised WING-0 didn't recommend Gundam Wing.

After the Playstation 2 came out, it dawned on me that Final Fantasy was finished. Whereas, conversely, Dragon Quest games keep getting better. Why? Those freakin' amazing, massive hidden dungeons after the main story.

To be fair, it's finished because the writers have been coasting and Squenix is stingy. If they remade FFVII as a first salvo, and hired the staff to create a world experience similar to FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX for FFXV, we'd be in an HD paradise. It'd be enough to make me update to a next-gen system.

Same here. I don't care to buy a PS3 because "Last Hope" and "FFXIII" Just... don't do it for me anymore.

Isn't my nickname a recomendation in itself? =P

I haven't been making recommendations in a while over little to no time to enjoy a good series.

It's not necessarily obvious to non-Gundam fans!

Try out Demonbane, if you haven't seen it already. Mild Lovecraftian references mixed with giant robots, humor, and snark, stir lightly, drink twelve episodes, enjoy.
