I've heard that online play for 360 is free if you have live gold.
is this true?

Depends on the game, most yes but a few no. PSU, still have to pay a subscription fee. Also they do have a demo weekend occasionally.

ah. also for off-line singleplayer, do you need a hunter's license?
and can you customise your character in single player

Not sure about that one. Hopefully someone with a 360 copy can clear that up.

You need to connect to Sega's servers even to play off-line. I don't think you'd need a Hunter's License, as you have to pay for that, and you can play off-line for free.
In regular single-player you must play as Ethan, but you can customise his clothes, and possibly some other things. In Extra mode you can create your own character.

sorry for the rediculously long absense, but I've just started playing the demo (fun!) and thinking about buying it.
can you play extra off-line and use the character online too (as in like pso) ?

No, you can't. Online and offline are completely separate.
