[22 January 2010] PS2 & PC servers for PSU closing soon!

Sega has announced that the Phantasy Star Universe servers for the PS2 and PC versions will be closing on 31 March 2010.

If you still want to play, subscribe soon, as no new subscriptions will be available after 29 January. Players who are still subscribed by then will get to play for free until the servers shut down.

To add insult to injury, the Xbox 360 servers will remain operational, and still receive updates and support.

EDIT: You do not need to renew your subscription! What was meant was having an account on the game, which Sega terms as "a subscription", even if it's not active. So if you've paid for a subscription in the past, you're good to go.

According to a thread by Edward on the official message board, you do not need to re-subscribe to be able to play during the free event. However, the official announcement, both on the message board and on the official site, has not been edited to reflect this. I hope this confusion will be straightened out so everyone can enjoy the free period. I've already sent him a PM.

Looks like you don't need to renew your subscription at all. The first post has been updated with this information.

makes sense even when I was online there wasn't a lot of people playing to begin with. From what I understand the 360 has tons of players still playing it

I haven't played PSU, but I belive that it is enough popular that eventually someone will start a private server. Or is there already?

Agh, crap...

And regarding the XBox 360 support not ending, well, the servers are from Microsoft's XBox Live service, not just Sega's as in the PC-PS2.

I honestly hope they release a new Phantasy Star title with online functionality during this year... And if it comes to the PS3, I'm already sold.
