Shining Force Phantasy Star

Would a Phantasy Star game work if it was crossed over with a Shining Force type game.

I mean, its set in Algo and you have 12 or so characters, like an army. Or at least a city watch.

I think if done right it would be fantastic.

The creator of the now defunct in-progress fan game Phantasy Star V: Victory of the Darkness seemed to think so, as well.

Why is it defunct?

Looked kinda promising, actually, from what I saw.

Personally, I wonder what could be done with a hybrid of Phantasy Star and something like Chrono Trigger, where time travel is involved.

Could be sorta fun if you had to destroy the darkness of several epochs instead of just one.

I have strongly considered using Shining Force-like battle engine with my remake of PSIII...

No idea. The author, -S, disappeared from the community like many others.

No, because... it's stille a project, hence the name :)

In fact, I developped a game engine in Python and my aim was to recode entirely from scratch Phantasy Star Generations 2. Once done, I wanted to remake PSIII. Everything was going fine, but I had to postpone it for 2 years because I got involved in Phantasy Star Generations 2 hacking. But as you'll see in some hours, I should be able to get back to my previous projects soon :)

It looks interesting. A bit ambitious though. 30 characters would be hard to manage, especilly if there is perma death. 10 would have worked just as well.

I thought an interesting idea would be to change Phantasy Star 1 a bit.

Have Alis declare herself queen at the start of the game and have people in the towns join her. Alis, Myau, Odin and Lutz would be the leaders and you would have the option to send them to any town that declares for Alis or to help take over a town loyal to Lassic. So in a sense you would be using the towns people themselves to hold each town and to attack monsters and robotcops that try to attack you.

A further idea would be to regularly attack monsters outside of town to keep their population down. If they become too numerous, they attack your towns. If they win, you loose the town. If you loose a town you risk a second town leaving your side and rejoining Lassic.

I would use Madusa as the governor of Palma and have her attack your towns as a boss type battle along with Dr Mad or even a dragon or two.

ME, I like the idea of changing around PS2.

Then again, grindy though it may be, it WAS my favorite of the series.

I like the idea of changing around PS2 to allow use of Tyler, Darum, and Tiem.
Also, a way to resurrect Nei after defeating Neifirst would be nice.

Maybe, you could beat Neifirst way down. Then, you convince her that her real enemy is not humans...but Mother Brain.

There must be a good way to do it.

EDIT: I know some people really don't like Darum. But, if you re-wrote it so as to make Darum not a bad guy...maybe, instead of robbing people...you find him in one of the early dungeons, trying to find Tiem....and he asks for your help and joins you. Or perhaps he is still at the bridge, but instead of robbing people he is begging.
When you see him, he begs you, too...but you don't give him money, but, instead, offer to help him find Tiem....and he joins you. Or maybe not. Maybe you bring Tiem to him there, and then he joins you in gratitude...not sure how you work this out. But I'd dtill like to see Darum get used.

Another thing that could be fun is to have some sort of Shrine in PS2....kind of like Alltrades Abbey in the Dragon Quest series...where you could learn cross-class skills...so your Biologist, for example, might be able to learn some Wrecker skills or so on.

Each character would have different things they could and could not learn....and it would cost different amounts for different characters...but you'd spend experience.

Likewise, you would not auto level-up when having enough experience, you'd have to choose to level up at the Shrine....this being a bit similar to Super Hydlide on SEGA.

Personally., I'm in love with this idea: http://androidarts.com/phantasy/PhantasyStar.htm X-Com + Phantasy Star, two of my favourite game-series! =) Not sure it would work though, since one of the strong points in PS is the focus on the characters, which might be lost if there are too many of them. That being said, Shining Force 2 managed that pretty well, as I recall.
