Will we ever see Phantasy Star V?

Discuss anything related to the Phantasy Star series

Please, no "lol pd isn't really dead!" stories. It would defeat the entire point of PSIV.

So what if the Great Light couldn't defeat it? It's like saying that your children can't grow up to be stronger than you.

Even without the profound darkness there would be so much to tell.
I mean, we are dealing with a sci fi universe, it means that about anything could happen from robot rebellion to none-friendly aliens.
What ever the reason, the shame is that phantasy star has a huge issue totaly in ad equation with nowadays concerns on climate problems. I mean PSV could totaly surf on the "green fashion", implying global warming and environmentaly friendly development. Phantasy star already has a link with those problems and we have climate control station and biomonsters, ecological crisis... we could have without any problem a "green" PSV
Too bad sega went over and over again with some dark stuff in new phantasy star-like universe.

I haven't read this topic from the start, but PSV could have "harvesting the remaining darkness" as it's plot. ;) "remaining darkness" as remaining dark forces. :)

The way you make that quote portrays me as some immature little child. I didn't throw "lol" in there, and I happen to think it's a very feasible option for a continued storyline. In the original one our heroes didn't know they could merely banish DF for 1000 years. They went in there with the intent on killing him off... for good. That doesn't render PS1 pointless does it?

Your analogy isn't a very good one either. One would think the Great Light (a being of pure energy) would be substantially more powerful than some mortal, flesh and blood beings.

My intention was to portray your idea as silly.

PSI's point was not "kill Dark Force", but to avenge Nero by killing Lashiec.
One would think the Great Light (a being of pure energy) would be substantially more powerful than some mortal, flesh and blood beings.

Sure, PSIV's heroes are of flesh and blood. But their weapons are not. They use the Elsydeon (a powerful spiritual sword), the Silver Tusk (a tusk imbued with magic), magic, Techniques, and energy-based weaponry. They had the Rings of the Stars to protect them from the evil energy.

Consider also that if chosen Protectors wouldn't be able to kill/seal it for eternity, why would the Great Light's will want them to face it and end the cycle? It wouldn't make sense.

Until Sega can get themselves stable enough. Just leave the PS series the way it is now. We already have one bad apple in the basket. Don't need another bad one. If they really want a new sequel to PS. Let it start with a new series. Don't say PSV. The story pretty much closed at PS4.

In contrary to popular opinion among Phantasy Star fans, Sega is not in financial troubles. Please stop spreading this misinformation.

Do you have to refer PSIII like it was a gigant failure in every post? We already know your opinion. Why to repeat the same all over again?

Maybe shall we ask ourselves if we really want a PSV with nowadays standards?

In my opinion (as an anonymous guy who has no influence or rights what so ever on the video game industry), nowadays J-RPG are way too... japanese.
It might sound cliché but I don't enjoy playing RPG full of boys band, fashion victims, magical girl power, cat nya-nya and japanese drama with PSU-ish bad acting sequences over filled with idiotic characters and kinder gardeners reactions. "Oh it's bad to be evil! I will protect everybody because I am a good guy and I have fashion with me".

The lack of capacity of previous systems resulting in less dialogues, made the 80's-90's RPG vague enough to imagine and redesign the characters the way we wanted.
For instance, I'm not so crazy about nei's new look and personality in psII remake, (I pictured her to be anything but a winny gothic lolita when I was playing on genesis)

My point here is, with nowaday standards, PSV would be filled with hyper metro sexual teenagers and annoying lolitas. I'm not so sure this is the kind of PSV I want.

Post Scriptum :

Have you seen Star Ocean (and especially star ocean IV), I really feel like if Phantasy star were to be made today, it would be very close to star ocean (with the good points and bad points)

PSU indeed has some bad points but you can't insult all of Japan's RPGs because of this one game. In most J-RPGs, the "evil" characters usally think what they're doing is right, but feel like they have to go to great lengths (like sacrificing lifes) to achieve their goals (it has happened many times through out history). This is what sets the story into play with other characters who want to stop these self-absorbed people. And that's what makes a great RPG in my opinion. There are also sterotypical demons and aliens that just want to kill for no reason, but that's a whole other story. Besides, they also usally have a good drive too (examples: Dhaos from ToP and Lavos from CT). Although, I do agree with you that the older RPG styles were better than the new ones.

I admit that Japan has its share of crap (like every other country in the world), but it doesn't even compare to how much America has. Seriously, while cat girls and young swordsman in games can be rather childish at times, I would rather play with them as heroes rather than some GTA gangster who rapes women, kills cops and steals money from people. Japanese RPGs have been getting kind of lame, but they're still a lot better than American ones. Not to mention that most Japanese RPGs these days are aimed to be sold in America so when they make them now-a-days, they're appealing to American tastes, not Japanese ones. Anime graphics are a lot better than cartoon ones. Besides, Japan perfers RPGs where as most American games are first person shooters. And I do think that there are more RPG fans here than FPS fans...

Also, what's wrong with cat styled girls? Do you not like Nei or Rika? I like them as long as the cat girlishness (for lack of better words) is not overkill. I do wish though that they would have left the PSII remake as it was and just improve the graphics. Nei does indeed seem better in the original than in the remake. Most remakes aren't as good as the original games (except for the improved graphics). Not to make a big deal of this, but I just wanted to state my opinion here and stop the Japanese RPG bashing. I do in fact agree that most old school RPGs are better than news ones. Anyways, if there will be a PSV, I do hope that it turns out more like PSIV than PSU. Though I doubt it will be made because of plot ideas...

Edless, you seem to be generalising Final Fantasy to the entire JRPG genre. I mean, most of your complaints point to that series in particular.

Too Japanese? As if older RPGs weren't very Japanese. There are no constraints on concept artwork.

PSU isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, in my opinion. Not to mention that you only saw Episode 1.

Actually for PSU I also did ambition of illuminus and read the online graphic novel. I regret that at some point for instance, when Ethan attacked the principal (potentially the most important man in Gural system) he then walks off like nothing happened.

I won't write more on PSU as I admit I am not a pro on this game and I am not willing to bash that game that has some great gameplay.

For J-RPG, you are true, I talk about Final Fantasy for the metrosexual part, but that appart, I also talk about tales of symphonia (or the tales of... serie), The world ends with you, infinite unidscovery and star ocean.

By the way, here is Star Ocean 4 :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czRZ0moK ... re=related

it partly illustrates my point with a teenage team. But past the critics, it is what phantasy star would be if it was done nowadays.

For those who don't want to watch the video, here are the points that I find cliché and a bit too tiedous.
the heroin being overpolite saying her sentence "you know, Edge, you always give me courage"
the green hair guy "Oh without a doubt, you are great Edge, that's why I follow you"
The 10 year old girl "Lem (talking about herself with the third person) will go (with you)"

It is also about the tone of their voices.

Well, looking at my examples, I mostly pointed out square enix RPGs and also the tales of (namco isn't it) but I have to admit that I loved valkyrie profile (it's old I know) many of the FF (but definitely not FFX-2) Jeanne D'Arc (well not an RPG) and I remember enjoying pretty much skies of arcadia.

I should play seventh dragon or shining winds to make up my mind on Sega's ability to make a RPG nowadays, didn't have the opportunity yet.

100% agreed!
I hate the lolita fashion and hyperactive "anime" laughter scenes in stories that should have more serious tone. It feels like all these japanese directors want to convert everything to comedy. I just can't take them seriously at all.
PSIV has some comedy but not too much. The comedy in PSIV does not go too far by for example making caracters to do ROFL, literally, in every scene where Raja says something funny.

Did we watch the same moving comic? He ran away from the colony and joined the rogues!
I also talk about tales of symphonia

That one did get cheesy at times, though there were more serious problems with its storytelling.

RPG characters have always been young teenagers. The Phantasy Star series was just an exception, even back in the day.

Okay, so you want to know about the little cock-teasers reffering to a possible "original PS" storyline sequel?

Let me illustrate something very recent by the series former rival...

The Final Fantasy series...

For years since it's release, little fanboys have been squirming in their ninja turtle underwear to see a re-release of FF7. This constant badgering gave Squaresoft (Now, Square-Enix... the name held so much pride before the merger) the insentive to release the previous titles. At first, in their original format and later, for the NES titles, with updated graphics, content, etc. (I, myself have PS4 for the DS and am thoroughly enjoying it. F*** you).

Now, to the point. About 4-5 months ago (rough estimate) a trailer of FF7 was released with PS3 level graphics. Needless to say, it sparked a huge outrage to find that S-E marked it as a teaser trailer and that no remake was in the works or on the shelf.

So! Where does this leave fans? You can take it as a "coulda been" trailer and accept that you will never see it's "remake", or you could take it as what Blizzard did with Starcraft 2. Deny any and everything until you have enough content to get fans excited about the game again (however, Starcraft 2 has less to do to get fans excited, but a hell of a lot more to actually deliver on).

Sega wants to see if there's still a market for Phantasy Star, and from the looks of things, there isn't. There could be assuming Sega was willing to give the title the workover it needs, but we all know how likely that is.

So with sub-standard planning/funding with excellent production, would a PS title be enough to respark the magic?

I think they'll look for their answer with PS0. Don't count the game out just yet, because you never know if you'll like it till you try it.

Guns N' Roses: Chinese Democracy.

Point made.
