I've beaten Phantasy Star 1, and 2. I am currently playing 3, and I like it a lot. It's got a really different look to it, but It's a lot of fun. I havn't played 4 yet, which appears to be everyone else's favorite.

Yeh you have GOT to play IV

I voted PSII.
Altough it's more linear than PSIV and has less dialogs with unique pictures, it has the most exciting storyline.

But I still wouldn't say that PSII is THE best. Each game fullfills eachother's storyline nicely.

Hmmh? I didn't get what you're after for.

Anyway in PSIV you don't always have to complete event's in a same order. In PSII you pretty much must do all the missions in the order they are given to you.

If a game is linear, you have no choice but to follow the game, Semix. It's not about accessibility or the ease of finding out what to do next.

I have to somewhat agree with Aolish's theory: younger gamers are generally going to prefer the newer games, or at least the games that they first played. I've seen this on other boards with regard to The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy series (many OoT and FFVII fans).

As for myself, it's no surprise that my first Phantasy Star game is still my favorite: Phantasy Star I. I got it on Christmas Day of 1988 (along with the Sega Master System). My first RPG experience, it was obviously unlike any other game I had ever played before. I remember telling my mom, "Hey, you don't die in this game!" That was because I hadn't left Camineet yet.

I played Phantasy Star I for quite a few years but somehow never got Myau to fly up to Lassic's castle in the sky (even though I had the Laerma Nut). Anyway, I loved exploring the three different planets, especially using the Ice Digger in Dezoris! I still remember the two towns on the planet where everyone called the people in the other town liars. Although I no longer have a Sega Master System (or Genesis), I picked up Phantasy Star Collection on GBA (my first purchase for the system), so I can try and beat the game, once and for all (I've been busy with a lot of other games).

What I love most about Phantasy Star I is the music. There are so many great and hummable themes in the game: the title screen, Palma, Motavia, the dungeons, etc. Sometimes I'll turn the game on and leave the title screen on just to hear the music for a few minutes. I also love the exploration. I played the game before the Web and online maps, so like many other kids, I had to draw my own maps. One of my best memories was getting lost in Maharu. I had to find Noah twice and then find my way out - that actually took a couple of months. I still remember finding all of the Laconian weapons, and fighting the different-colored dragons. I would say that Phantasy Star I is one of my top five favorite games of all-time.

My second favorite Phantasy Star game is Phantasy Star II. I got it in 1990. I'll admit that I used the guide throughout the game (I even brought it to school and read it during class, lol). Similar to my experience with Phantasy Star I, I got up to Dark Force but always lost. Like Phantasy Star I, II has a lot of great music. The "save" music and Paseo town music are both excellent. I hope that if I have enough free time this spring and summer, I can finally beat this game.

Right now, I just recelty downloaded Phantasy Star IV. Is it an awesome game or what!? While the music isn't as good as in I and II (although there's an area that seems to be the Biosystems Lab from II and music from a dungeon in I) the game moves along rather quickly, which is certainly a change of pace. I like that I don't have to level-grind too much (although I do prefer getting the best items for my characters before going on to the next mission). Even though I'm only four hours into it, I can see why many other fans like IV so much. Lastly, I know there are vehicles in this game, and I can't wait to get them!

I vote the PSIV. It was the first Phantasy Star game I've played, and after, when I tried to play PSIII or PSII, I compared them to the IV..
Well, I think it's simply better in many aspects

I have only played PSIII and IV so I don't say anything for sure but I'm pretty confident PSIV is/will be my favourite.

New to the message board (first post). I went with the original just because it is such a dynamic game, way ahead of its time, and it looks and plays like no other 8-bit game either for the Master System or the NES. I think it also kind of shaped how I approach spending my own money. That is to say, whether I buy something now or wait a little bit and buy something similar but better and more expensive, like I would do when collecting meseta. Sounds kind of dorky, but I think it is true, and shows the impact the game had on me.

I see that 4 is generally accepted as the best of the series though. This makes me look forward to playing the 4th, as I have really only beaten the original a few times, am in the middle of 2 on the Virtual Console, played 3 only a little when I rented it a couple times many years ago (what a mistake that is, to rent an RPG), and then played 4 for maybe an hour on an emulator. But the plan is to beat 2 and then move on to 3 and then 4 on the VC.

I've played from the original 1-4, and currently playing Phantasy Star Generations 1,but to be honest, my favorite in the series is the original part 2 and part 4.

I politely refuse to answer your poll...

Postby Wing-0 » Fri May 29, 2009 12:58 pm

Why do I refuse? Because you didn't add the option of ALL OF THEM ROCK...

PS1 rocks because it was the first RPG with a female lead (that I know of)
PS2 rocks because of its setting and awesome ending
PS2 Text Adventures rock because of exploring the characters in a "visual novel" style broke off from the established form while keeping it in touch with the source material
PS3 rocks because of its generation system and the inclusion of Mieu (damn right)
PS4 rocks because of the closing of the classic series and its awesome cast
PS Gaiden and Adventure rock because they offered a bit more of insight on the Algo solar system

PSO rocks because of its misterious atmosphere and cool music, as well as introducing new people to the PS concept

PSU rocks because of its fun play mechanics and interesting storyline, even if it has some shortcomings. The inclusion of making custom characters greatly enhances the replay value and of course, because they hired Rie Tanaka for the voices of Karen Erra and Helga Neumann.
