How is Rhys' name pronounced?

Postby MrKite » Sun Oct 18, 2009 1:09 am

I recently watched a Let's Play on YouTube where some guy pronounced his name like "Riss", with the ending sound "-iss" like in hiss, a noise a snake makes. But long before, there was some game reviewer on YouTube who was also called Rhys, but he pronounced his name as Reese, as in the actress Reese Witherspoon, or Kyle Reese, the hero of the first Terminator movie, and I'm assuming, that THAT'S the way it's pronounced, but I just want to be sure.

If you want to pronounce it the viking way, it's Rhys as is "Rheese".

I...I always called him "rise", but breathier.

No, I don't know why. It clearly is "rheese" as it's a name still used to this day and I've heard it since.

This is like that time I had to stop calling Rydia "ride-ee-ah", only I don't find Rhys attractive in the slightest and I hate his game.

I pronounce Rhys as "rhees", or would it be easier to say; "re-e-ss"?

By the way, if anyone is wondering about the original Japanese names, you can check them out quickly here:

Rhys is a pretty cool name in my opinion. I may one day use it in a game or manga.

I don't understand. Where in either of those links does it show how to pronounce the names right?

It doesn't tell you how to pronounce them. I was replying to Danny's Wikipedia link.

It's pronounced REEs like Reese Witherspoon or Reece's Pieces.

Not only is it the Viking way, it's also the modern way in Europe. One of my favorite Welsh singers is Gruff Rhys (pronounced Griff REEs as well). And it's kinda common.
