I get the fire staves before I battle Neifirst. They're great weapons until they're edged out by Kain's/Hugh's laconian maces. (As a side note, I'm not too thrilled with all the medieval weaponry in a fairly hard sci-fi game, but it's a minor complaint.) And yes, Shir steals jewel crowns, as well as shune boots for herself. She also steals items that can be sold back for some good moolah in the first half of the game, like laser shots.
One of my first times playing through the game I spent a good portion of my summer break taking Shir shopping until my end game team was loaded with Star Mists and Moon Dews. I still can't believe I spent all the time doing that, but hey, I won.
I'll also note that acid shots should not be overlooked as decent weapons, especially in places like Uzo island and around Kueri, with all of the flying biomonsters, and then again in the dams with the heavily armed mechas. Whereas a laser knife is basically useless against the big mechas, the acid shots will allow you to take Hugh along (if you REALLY want to take a biologist through the dams). I think if you equip two, they deal about 50 points of damage combined per round (don't quote me on this), and since they're guns, that's the damage they deal for any monster/mecha. Not too shabby.
