Techniques, Magic, and Megid

Hi everyone!
This is a question for all you experts on Phantasy Star lore. I've been trying to dig up as much information as I can, but it seems that the more I try to understand things, the more confusing and convoluted it gets.
So, as far as I know, Megid is the ultimate destruction Technique learned in Phantasy Star II, III, and IV. I read somewhere (I think it was the Compendium) that Lutz was the one who originated Techniques. I can believe that, but this is where things get weird.
I know Chaz learns Megid from Re-Faze. If that's the case, shouldn't Re-Faze predate Lutz as a Guardian of Rykros? Why does Re-Faze know Techniques? How did Rolf learn Megid without going to Rykros? If Lutz could teach it, what was the point of Re-Faze at all?
In fact, how in the world does the Profound Darkness know Megid???
Shouldn't the Profound Darkness be using magic?
Is this because Techniques are derived from magic? What's the difference between them?
If someone knows the answers, I will eternally be grateful to you for saving my brain from exploding.
Thanks!
