PSO Beastiary (commentary encyclopedia of the enemies)

Postby TB » Fri Jun 20, 2008 9:40 pm

I've always been interested into the enemies in PSO, however annoying or almost impossible to beat they would be: they are as important to the game as the items and the progress of the characters through the game. So I'm going to make my little descriptive beastiary to explain the lifestyle and the offensive and defensive moves of these creatures/robots for everyone to enjoy ^^ . You might even learn something new about them xD .

---FOREST Area---

Booma/Gobooma/Gigobooma
"The Boomas are more than likely the most common animals in the FOREST area, being first to give a not-very-welcoming welcome to rookie Hunters. Their sharp claws and pointy nasal horn allow them to dig underground and to the surface to surprise and attack anything and anyone who step into their territory, followed with a ferocious roar. Their bird-like legs, however, refrain their mobility to rush at enemies effectively, as they hold the weight of their muscular body. Apparently, their left arm strikes more swiftly than their right arm.

The fur of a Booma changes throughout its maturity, which is typically dark red at first once it is old enough to venture out on its own or within its pack. Those with yellow fur are called Goboomas, while Gigoboomas's purple fur indicates the peak of their maturity and thus their significant physical strength. The ears, nasal horn and the hair on the head of a Booma also grow larger as its life progresses, making it look more intimidating in size."

Savage/Barbarous Wolf

Rag/Al Rappy
"One of the iconic heads of the Phantasy Star saga and one of the mascots of PSO, the Rag Rappy has become a highly popular creature to Hunters. The Rag Rappy sports distinctive anteanna-like body parts, tipped with fluff, and bright yellow feathers. Though territorial enough to attack invading offenders, Rappies are generally shy and cowardly. Mimicking death is their most common answer to a battle, waiting for the enemy to leave so they can flee safely. That said, Rappies are nearly impervious to being killed, however harsh could ever be the attack they take. Hunters will usually only persist in attacking them after knocking them down so the Rappies can drop items and, on rare occasion, special treasures. It is said that Rappies do not need to hibernate during winter, due to the warmth they store in their body.

The Rappy family counts such a large number of subspecies, recording over ten different Rappy kinds, that. Another subspecies of Rappy that appears in the FOREST area is the fabled, rare Al Rappy. In comparison to the widely populated Rag Rappy, it is colored blue and is prized by Hunters due to its habit to transport very valuable treasures. In contrary to common belief, Challenge Mode runs attempted by Hunters balance the reward of defeating it with its proof as a powerful threat agaisnt low-level Hunters."

Grass Assassin
"Said to be the mutated form of the Locusti Religisega, the gigantic-sized Grass Assassin species is actually one of the oldest lifeforms of the Algol Star System. The Grass Assassin has two photon scythes for slashing preys and enemies alike, as well as an organ that allows it to shoot silk to trap them. Its poor eyesight, provided by five eyes, with the one in the center being the biggest, limits its attacks with slow movements. Although it may look timid, it can behave aggressively by letting loose a high-pitched cry and rushing at the enemy threatening it. As you would expect, its aim toward the enemy is also handicaped by its eyesight.

Grass Assassins are almost exclusively females, since their abdomen holds offsprings waiting to mature to go out by themselves. This example of parental care may explain its tendency to attack violently: Grass Assassins are thus tenacious, even at critical status. Their weak point resides in tearing its thorax and abdomen apart, cutting the support between vital organs. However, this will cause the offsprings to escape and spread in the wild. No one has confirmed yet if all of the offsprings are also females or include males."

Toy Rappy
"Never seen on Ragol yet, the Toy Rappy was created and used for C.A.R.D. Technology, therefore late in the timeline of Pioneer 2's history. The Toy Rappy was built to mimic the physical appearance of a real Rappy, though no other purposes have been confirmed. It apparently uses the same material and structure as a Robo Chao, which might lead this similarity to a secret that breaks coincidence."

...and you can start discussing xD . I'll fill them on a regular basis, so stop by often ^^ .

Maybe add in little strategy snippets. With the Boomas, I found that their average size and tighly packed groups were easily handled with Confuse traps.

It's a beastiary, not a game tip thread xD . Finding your own strategies using multiple means agaisnt different enemies for different situation is really one of the thrills of going through levels over again to battle enemies in risingly more effective ways.
