Hello. Welcome to my topic.

I like to ask you guys at PSCave on what is your personal stance on Trust and Respect.
Do you think that Trust and Respect needs to be earned by others, or do you think that Trust and Respect needs to be given to others?
Sorry if this seems like a pointless topic, but I'm just curious at what people feel when they think about a subject like this, that's all.

[Edit by ThePeaGuy on [TIME]1109642325[/TIME]]

IMHO trust is earned, as you can't blindly trust anyone; once it is earned, you give it. Respect, in the other hand, happens in reverse order, you respect everything and everyone around you out of mere manners, but such respect can be lost with the wrong actions or attitude.
As I stated in my last post, the way you ask for things affects directly the way you'll receive them, or what you receive. If a total stranger denotes something I can correct about myself like adults, and with manners, I'll be glad to concede as best as I can (besides, it's for my own good, isn't it?). On the other hand, if an aquaintance or even friend comes to me with a holier-than-thou attitude to tell me what I should do, I might reconsider a couple of hours later, but the first thing I'll give him meanwhile will be the finger.
The amount of respect you can expect from others is directly proportional to the amount of respect you show others.

I agree with ROMeo. There is no reason not to respect anyone unless you know of something they did. However, you don't have any reason to trust them, either.

I dont trust anyone until theyve proven themselves to be worthy of it. (Im not gonna tell the kid i just met about some personal dilemma....), and also, I respect everyone until theyve proven they are not worthy of that respect. (I dress a little.....out there......if someone has to blatantly insult my ways, ....F*** them.)

Respect is for everyone. It is a requirement for a decent social life.
Trust is only for a few. You know what people can do to you when they have a chance. Trust must be earned by consistency and coherency of one“s actions and thoughts, whatever they are.

Trusting shouldn't come difficultly, but in this day and age it's one of the rare and lost virtues. I am a guileless person so I'll tend to trust a perfect stranger until he/she does something to compromise that trust (which sadly enough doesn't take very long). Therefore, I trust very few individuals. Respect is similar, for one ought to be true to his/her word through deeds. I don't care who you are or where you come from, if you are honest and do your best to uphold you word of honor, I will respect you. I respect even fewer people. However, a lasting trust and respect is earned, as has said ROMeo.

I feel that everyone should be respected...up until someone disrespects me. It goes both ways. I'll respect anyone who respects me. So respect should be given.
Trust, on the other hand, is earned. It's difficult for me to trust anyone, due to past experiences I've had with it. You trust those who've earned it, and who also trust you. Without that level of trust, it's as valuable as the garbage they're feeding you along with those lies.

You must earn trust, and it can be easily broken. Respect is what you must give everybody until you have a good reason not to.

I don't think trust is easily lost, for then it's not real trust, but it's true that trust, like virginity, can only be lost once.

Seems that I have a different outlook then most on this board.
Trust is something that I believe must be earned. I will not confide in someone I have just met. This is just common sense. Of course, as I learn more about a person, I may be more inclined to trust them. Familiarity is the foundation of trust.
However, my opinion differs when it comes to respect. In my eyes, a person must earn respect. Certainly, a base amount is afforded them, but my respect is not simply given, it's earned. Respect is a personal thing, and it's yours to dole out.

YOU SHALL EARN MY TRUST, AND GOD BE D*MNED! it takes awhile to earn my trust!
Respect? bah...respect is an emotion thats a rip-off of honor...Respect is your opinion of someone elses honor...And it is very very very hard for me to think someone else can have honor...For i only have a small portion of hjonor....

Trust should be earned through people that you ahve known for a while. Its not an easy thing to get from someone else.
Respect is something that you get from impressing, or being a part of a cause to "improve" or "help" something. Thats the way I see it.

I had a thought last night...
Trust is definitely something that should be earned and proven, and I think we all agree there. However, respect is different. Contrary to what Ein said, respect is different than honour. Respect is what should be given to anyone you meet, and only then can it be diminished depending on their actions.
An example of a facet of respect is tact and etiquette. If you lack these things in interaction with a person you have just met because "they haven't earned your respect yet", you will make very few friends. Of course, the point isn't to be popular, but respect (or lack thereof) is not to be used as an excuse to treat people badly.
Honour, in my way of thinking, could be a sort of amplified respect. Not only do you treat them with common courtesies that others recieve, but you also trust them because certain traits you admire in them, as well as seriously listen to what wisdom they have to offer.

Honour, in my way of thinking, could be a sort of amplified respect.

Sounds good, but I rather think the difference between respect and honor is that respect goes outwards, towards those around you, while honor goes inwards, not only as a form of self-respect, but as a way of life, for living in peace and harmony with yourself, something that is carried inside, but with effects that are projected outside and are visible by those around you.

According to the dictionary, however, honor (in this context at least), is both the moral quality that drives you to the acomplishment of duty AND the praise or good reputation that follows virtue.
