So im starting to get into programming, starting out with PERL, though im still figuring out how to work it.

Any other programmers here? Be kinda interesting to see. If so what language(s) do you know, and any wisdom you may have to impart upon anothers.

Congratulations! Programming can be lots of fun. The first language I learned was Basic, but nowadays I code mostly in C and in Matlab. I also know Java, though I haven't touched it in two years.

As for wisdom... If you're in to PERL you might want to consider this...

I started with Basic, and moved on to Visual Basic. Years later I learned C in my first year of college, and Java in the last part of the first year and my second year. After that I learned JavaScript, which is what I'm coding in these days, as it's the language my MSN client runs on.

Before JavaScript, I've learned some Perl, but there was a problem with my installation, so I put it off.

As for wisdom... If you're in to PERL you might want to consider this...

in Perl, excluding the necessary first line that indicates what the file has to be processed by.

Perl is primarily a scripting language for manipulating text, and it does that very well.

The title attribute is mouse-over text. The alt attribute is supposed to contain text that describes the image, providing a text equivalent, which appears when the image can't load for whatever reason.

Benoit recommended me Basic a few months back.

Since then, I didn't do aught other than the "hello world!" bollocks.

I did write programmes on my Amstrad when I was 5 or 6 though. (Behold my powers of autism!)

I program for a living. My first language was BASIC, which I learned when I was a child. Eventually I learned C, C++, Java, LISP... well, a lot. Nowadays I mostly code in C# and Java.

My advice is to keep learning and trying new things. Also learn C, Java or C#, and LISP. I've found those languages provide strong foundations for programming skills.

I had a really bizarre dream some weeks ago. I dreamt I had crossed the "LISP-singularity" (a point on the highly non-trivial learning curve for emacs) and could now execute LISP-code in my mind.
Even more bizarre; the ladies at the party I was dreaming of were really impressed...

Lord Khyron was programming in Pascal and Rpg and Ada before most of you were born XD

I remember loving Pascal in '84. Mm.. I remember using Visual Basic in 1996 as 3.0..

Pascal was a high level language unlike Basic. Procedures, Functions, all in a logical order. Call the order of your functions and procedures. This is so unlike Basic.

Basic is the most disorganized piece of crap in existence. Basic will literally have you jumping around like a madman trying to track down your error. With no SET line numbering system, it is very hard to debug.

I never liked basic. Pascal, Cobol and C for me!

I should back away slowly and run when I'm out of sight. But somehow, you've become my new personal hero.

I want to learn C++ as the job descriptions I've seen for good jobs with video games companies always seem to require it. And experience, which sucks, as how the fuck can I get work experience if nobody employs people without experience?

I have zero knowledge of programming languages. I'm learning to make text adventures in ALAN at the moment, which is like a simplified programming language, so I hope I can get my head around it enough to learn a proper language.

Ooooh teh nerd languags. Sadly enough, I have discovered I'm not too talented at learning the lingos of the computer, so I always say kudos to those that do.
