As a little kid, of at least 10, I have wanted to create something great. I used to feel that it my place in life to craft a story and characters that people would connect to on an emotional level, perhaps causing them to fantasize about what it would be like to live in the world i have created. If nothing else, good enough to get a small group of people, such as yourselves, to visit a forum and post their opinions on a regular basis discussing plot twists and holes.
Since the days of my childhood, sketching poorly drawn scenes from a small paragraph pasting said paragraph on the drawing and finally stapling it all together making a 'book', much has changed. I wouldn't say for creation has left me, but something has. For about 4-5 years now I've been having something of a dry spell. I keep trying to write, because lets face it if you have seen my 'art' posts I'm not that good, but all I get is crap.
There are characters up there, in the vast emptiness that is my head, as well as backgrounds for the more important of them. The story is all pretty much worked out, I know what i want to happen for the most part. I see everything so clearly in my mind but the ideas come out looking like a 3 year old had a siezure while fingerpainting with a dead chicken... The more I try to write the worse I feel what I put down on paper.
So to the point, for those of you who do write, how are you able to keep from tearing everything you write to pieces thinking it is utter garbage? How do you stay motivated to keep writing when every voice in your head is screaming at you to quit?
Let other people read it. Trust me, here. Stephen King threw out his first manuscript of "Carrie", but his wife retieved it and he finished it. I write myself, and I have somebody read my writing when I think it's crap. I take thier opinion, and either toss it or keep it. That's how I finished my first short story, "The Illuminated Smoke" (I'll post it here someday, I promise). So, just stick with it, maybe get some new inspiration, and remember this: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

When I want to write something, I sit down and write. Whether it be at the computer, in a binder or on a notepad, I just write. Doesn't matter to me if it isn't worthy of the Pulizer Prize, just start writing. The more you write, the better you'll become at it. You'll write one thing, and then another idea will come to you, and then another on top of that. Don't think too hard, especially when you're just starting. Writing a story doens't always mean you have to start at the beginning, but rather to harmonsiously fit all the parts and plots together. So remember, the key to writing is to write.

I like to write. I never care about what people think about my works, I just do them as I want them. I've made some nice stories already, and I'm proud of them.

Some things I do when writing:
I rarely take seriously the first try, my first draft is always bad and goes through endless revisions. Lately, instead of drafting directly, I rather first put into paper ideas, any idea that comes to my mind I put it into paper and later on I see how well it fits, then I can write a draft. Also whatever I write passes through the revision of my best friend who is sort of my personal editor.
Also don't force yourself, if you rush a miracle man you get rotten miracles. Things must come up naturally, just relax.
