Toobad, the game was pretty good. Though can't understand the huge panic about it...and in the States ! lmao. When everything else is allowed over there, can't see why they panic about this.

It is a panic, because the rating system was bypassed.
Sure, 11 year olds and 7 year olds play GTA.. All they see is guns and blowing stuff up..
But do you really want that 7 or 11 year old watching graphic sex? If that's the case, then you also want pedophilia around too... Hell, let's really mess up the kids.
I don't want my 19 month old niece to grow up and see that as well..
I truly don't...
Most parents don't give a damn about their kids to begin with, If the Rating system stops caring, no one will truly care.
We'll have more 11-14 year olds whining about censorship on the net, just because they can't get porn.
It's sad..it shouldn't have been on there to begin with for the rating it got. The Disney of Video games has shown it's face.. LOL

The ESRB rates games for a reason. However, they cannot enforce their ratings in households across the world. If GTA:SA is falling into the hands of kids that are not of the correct age or mental maturity, then it is the fault of the parents and not necessarily the developers. Oh, it's easy to pander to a group's ignorance and use developers as a scapegoat, but when you come down to it, it's the parents initiative and not the developer's. Or the ESRB for the matter. They have rated the product, much like a movie is rated. However, when kids watch a movie that they can't handle, we don't see the activists up in arms over that, do we?
However, what irks me is that the developers aren't targeting the demographic that, according to the label issued by the ESRB, can play the game... they're targeting the teenagers that don't. The label says one thing and the advertising tactics say another.
In any case, if people are worried about impressionable youth getting access to content that they shouldn't be, then they should cracking down in their own homes first. Getting pornography on the internet is much easier then downloading it for a specific game could ever be.
But to quote South Park: "As long as there's sex, parents don't care about violence."

Yes Laco, But if parents don't want to do their job.. Then it's bad.
We already don't see it in the schools. Kids raised with no respect, teachers have no power. Teachers have to do the job of the parents too, If the teachers didn't do that, the children would be worse off.
What if the teachers didn't do the parents jobs?
This can be paralleled. So if the parents won't do their job, let that happen and abandon the children to begin with? No one protect the children?
Yes.. Let's just not give a damn and watch civilization get worse. Eh.. No thank you. If the damn parents won't do their job, like they *****ing should, then someone else needs to step in.
I mean, if CPS didn't exist, how many kids would be dead right now?
P.S. I think the real problem is.. WHAT THE HELL is that stuff doing on a commercial game? It isn't a PORN game you know.. o.o
That is the real problem here.
[Edit by Lord Khyron on [TIME]1122011404[/TIME]]

I'm saying that the "witch trial" paradigm that people have over videogames and their content is foolish. Why not attack the music industry and television industry as fervently? Why, of course, it's because videogames are new and people still adopt foolish and outdated perceptions of them due to fear and ignorance.
Once again, this is in the hands of parents, and only parents. No governmental group can make parents do anything, and if they could, we would have bigger problems then the state of our children. Parents need to be much more vigilant. Additionally, the department stores in charge or retail of these games must watch who they're selling to, because they accept some responsibility.

But if parents don't want to do their job.. Then it's bad.

I doubt there are many parents who want their children to turn out to be bums who live off them. I doubt there are many parents who deliberately have children just to see them fail. No, the problem is complacency. If prompted by someone through education, not forced be government, parents will be better equipped to handle the media that their kids take in. I'm not suggesting censorship; I'm suggesting independant vigilence. That is far more effective then a strict government decree.
The situation of each child's mental maturity varies so much that a law banning certain games from a certain age bracket would never be fair or effective. It's overgeneralizing, not to mention that such a law would cripple the videogame industry permanently.
But no, let's pursue the videogame boogeyman for "corrupting youth" while feeding them the reality T.V garbage on network television. That is the failure of parents, not videogames. Parents let the T.V raise their kids.

It was still wrong for the game to have that content to begin with..
Since when did Rockstar games become a porn game maker?
Whether or not ratings need enforcement, it's the fact that THAT MATERIAL was on the game to begin with..
When it's purely not a porn game.
You don't just accidentally leave that stuff..

Laco is right that the responibility comes down to the parents. But this time its all Rockstar's fault. Their negilgence and idiocy of thinking that they could hide this code in a game, and wait for someone to uncover it was pure stupidiity. ANd now its hurting them financially as all GTA:SA's are being pulled of store shelves.

Of course, I'm not condoning including hidden pornographic content... that bypasses and defeats the purpose of a rating imposed by the ESRB. But, I don't have a lot of respect for Rockstar anyway... GTA never interested me for more then a couple hours. Just gets tired.

Well, yeah. You see the concerned parents groups EVERY time some new media becomes mainstream. For example, the dime novels, back in the day they were new, were considered just as much a moral problem as video games are today. However, nowadays, it seems that we're LUCKY if a child expresses an interest to read over playing video games or watching TV (which will not be as beneficial to mental development).
It is rather sick, considering the state of domestic affairs (ahem) right now; really, I don't see any reason why I should particularly care if another person's kid watches a certain show, reads a certain book, or plays a different game. Rather than join a parents group about the issue, I would just not allow my kid to play the game; if other parents allow their kids to, I suppose it's their prerogative. Really, I wouldn't have bought the game for him anyway; there are surely better games than that -- GTA really seems to be a game purely about shock value.
But really, I think these people don't have their priorities straight. It's always seemed to me that between the matter of sex and glamorized killings, I'd be more concerned about the killings and violence than, say, Janet Jackson's mammaries. A right to life is more important than chastity; one act creates a life, while another takes it away. Besides, sex makes people feel better than wanton violence and destruction. Yet we see so much more of it than sex that it's absurd that they'd complain about a nipple being revealed on live TV (I'm sure plenty of Europeans can agree that it's ridiculous). After all, if people are going to, as most parental groups seem to worry, emulate what they see in these forms of media, which WOULD we worry about more? A boy deciding to stick up for his right not to be bullied, taking a gun into school, or teen sex? (Then again, the latter seems to be the bigger problem anyway, in terms of frequency. And then, I'm sure plenty of people won't see ithe latter as immoral anyway.)

Perhaps I should've clarified: I'm talking about individual vigilence with parents, not a group of parents getting together. Groups like that tend to range into the "raving activist"category.
You can't apply a set of rules to a kid and then expect them to fit on another.

GTA really seems to be a game purely about shock value.

Couldn't agree more. That's part of the appeal, and people are drawn to it.

But really, I think these people don't have their priorities straight. It's always seemed to me that between the matter of sex and glamorized killings, I'd be more concerned about the killings and violence than, say, Janet Jackson's mammaries.

Again, I'm in complete agreement with you. I would think we should worry about the things that are most pressing, like staying alive, before we address the subject of decency.
But again, I'm not suggesting the abolishment of violence and sex... these things have their place. I'm merely suggesting that parents, individually, should watch what their kids are taking in.

I think the ultra-violence in today's games are far worse than sexual contents. Either way I've never liked the GTA games.
[Edit by DaveGeorge on [TIME]1122117920[/TIME]]
