PSII MMORPG! ^.^

Discuss anything related to the Phantasy Star series

Postby skymandr » Sun Sep 09, 2007 8:23 pm

Haha! A friend of mine and I had the exact same idea ten years ago. We called it Phantasy Star Online. Never got beyond concepts though, since neither of us really knew how to solve the actual online bit of it... ;) It had a section on my very first homepage back in... 1996? Or 1997 maybe. Ah, the nostalgia!

It would be great to see such a project, though unlike Z I think big scale theorising is better suited for fan-fiction and smaller fan games, since a world to be enjoyed by all phans should be shaped by the common knowledge (the canon) and not by individual designers fancies (no matter how well thought out).

Yeah, it's pretty nice, with some questions unanswered, cause you've got something to think about.

But some things would really be nice to know.

well, sry, maybe i got a bit off topic xD

it would be cool if it was a Game where you can choose your own path, and decide what you want to do.

The ending in particular should always stay open, IMO. It's just one of the things that makes the game what it is.

Fleshing out the story, providing more subplots, explanations and backstories... actually, that sounds a lot like the PSG2 remake. Why don't we just get that translated :P

I've considered getting a Japanese PS2, or maybe chipping an EU one, and importing PSG1&2, but it costs a little too much I guess. Besides, my Japanese proficiency hasn't really benefited from disuse so I guess it might not be very easy playing them either...
To bad there isn't a good PS2 emulator around yet...

Given the games' apparent technical mould-breaking (lol), I wouldn't be too surprised if PCSX2 ran them capably.

MY F@#$$#@#@# god!!!!!!

Man i cant beleive my eyes, i have been thinking of doin this for so long now it aint funny. I have dabbled in a few different languages and often recreate PS2 just to get that nostagic feeling ect.......

Anyway, If any 1 is definatly interested and has some skills in graphics(2d/3d design/modelling/animation), sound ect....., then send me a message and lets get this thing story boarded and up and running.

Some things we need to figure out is, is it 3d/2d. Are battles realtime or turn based, i think along the lines of WOW style of game play would be awesome for a Online PS2 rpg. I like the idea's of the different classes and stuff but i think it should stay true to the original ps2, aswell as there are only 2 planets to visit ect...... Just a thought.

Anyway enough from me for now, as I said, if any 1 is seriously interested, then message me and lets see how far we can get this thing goin.

PS.
Heres some of my previous work(remember I'm no artist)
this is a populous remake i started and almost finished, but ran into a lot of hardware problems and a 2 year break meant it wasnt ever finished.

And this is a Magic Carpet remake i have also wanted recreate but due to some copyright issues with the original graphics and music i was using, it also has been dropped.

cheers and hope to hear from you all soon.

I actually got them both running yesterday, albeit sluggishly slow. For some reason colours were inverted also...

You know, I've always thought that a good way to create a new Phantasy Star series which is fresh and original, yet still staying true to the roots of the series and not messing with the established cannon would be to make it a prequel to the original series. There are millions upon millions of years between the sealing of the Profound Darkness and the start of PSI. There's a lot of time for highly advanced civilizations to rise and fall. For stories to be told about those civilizations. While you wouldn't have Numen... you would have Dezolians, Motavians, and likely an android race - along with perhaps new races created similarly to Nei.

To a digree, I think a great setting for an MMORPG would be in the time of Aures Landale's unification campaign. Although that would probably limit players to only one race and one planet. So perhaps the Aures Landale campaign would work better as an RTS.

Personnaly, at first I thought PSO was to be a PSII MMORPG before it came out.

I was wondering whether or not we were to see the heroes of PSII as we would have made parallel quest in the same time and world.

I also was wishing for jet scooters and big space ships that would travel from one planet to another. A big space travel compagny that would organise only 2 trips per day.

Most of all, I too was hoping to see Motavian Palmian and Dezolians. Too bad they stressed the newman part in PSO/U, they just became some ordinary elves comparable to anyother MMORPG (lineage WoW...).
