@Eradose
I actualy got that game and loved it, i had a hard time seeing WTF was wrong with it, it had great music the gameplay was great on the games that were in that awesome collection.

I know it got bad reviews, but thats cause most people who do reviews are jackasses...im looking at you Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb!!! They threw a fit saying he controls were worse then the original.. guess what... IT PLAYED THE SAME DAMN WAY!!! SAME DIFFICULTY AND EVERYTHING IT WAS JUST IN 3D!!!!
They wanted something more, but for 20 bucks it was a great collection and is a lot of fun.

I no longer listen to most people who do reviews anyhow, Adam Sessler could not even get the title of Super Mario RPG for the SNES right, the dumb ass called it Super Mario RPG Land of the seven stars.. ERRRR WRONG! it is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the seven stars.

I watch Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb get shit wrong all the time like a lot of people who give reviews, now days i say do not listen to reviews and just play the damn game for yourself.

sorry.... went on a rant again.. anyhow.. point being the Sega Classics Collection is awesome i have it, it is fun and the people who do reviews are morons.

I would agree with you Benoit if it wasn't for the PS release on Sega Saturn which was the release we were waiting for with all elements a fan was waiting for.

You were waiting on a collection like the Saturn's Phantasy Star Collection? That's what we're getting!
I wish they could make a little effort like adding some extra little minigames (bonus game in flash) or for example making a village phantasy star style where you could meet and talk to all the PS char each and everyone of them being able to either give you an access to a mini game or talk to you about their feelings, and how they saw the adventure plus telling you about some side event that happened to them.

Eh, that's kind of cheap.
and no not another online PS game unless you can truely link the storylines with the classic PS games...

So a Phantasy Star game is only good if it can be linked to the original saga? I don't agree. PSO is a great sub-series on its own right. I haven't played PSU yet.

I would also never make another online PS game again, i would go back and actualy make some sequals to the real series.

Really, even when the cash you make from it is many times higher than actually selling one time games that you don't have to pay subscriptions? With all respect but thanks God you don't run Sega, otherwise it would have gone bankrupt a long time ago.

SEGA, if you are listening, their are plenty of people left in the US that rather play games from Japan.. good games.. quirky games.. the kinds of games like we used to get a lot back in the day on the 8 and 16 bit consols.. please stop doing stupid crap and release something good.. and no not another online PS game unless you can truely link the storylines with the classic PS games...

I doubt SEGA reads PSCave forums, if you have to say it to them, go to their forums and say it there. Also, market dynamics changed, many of those people who played in the 8 and 16 bit generations have grow out of video games, now the sales are aimed at a newer generation that wants flashier graphics a great amounts of gore, fast paced actions and long cinematics. Face it, we're a minority.

No, they aren't. There a lot of responsible people who would do really evaluates a title, people like Jeff Gerstmann who preferred to quit his job than allowing his reviews be changed due to marketing agreements and the many who left gamespot for the same reason. They're professionals who have a code of ethics, not a bunch of random fans who think they're able to criticize video games.

You're a fan, fans are eager to have new products, now fanboysm aside, you can't ignore that even for the purpose of Sega Ages, Sega have been doing a poor job (just look on what Capcom did to Megaman X remake or Banpresto did on Super Robot Taisen Original Generations remake for PS2), they would just appeal the most hardcore fans and the japanese (because let's be realistic, there's a market for everything in Japan).

You were waiting on a collection like the Saturn's Phantasy Star Collection? That's what we're getting!

The point is that they're just placing the same product release for the saturn now to ps2, with the very same enhancements and that we'll probably not see it overseas.

So a Phantasy Star game is only good if it can be linked to the original saga? I don't agree. PSO is a great sub-series on its own right. I haven't played PSU yet.

Fully agreed, and PSU is a great stand-alone game, the way the history is told with chapters like an anime is kinda new and interesting for a video game and I must say that when not looking down on it because it's not PSV in Algol the story is also interesting and enjoyable.

YES, and i do not care if i get ban for this .. but it HAS TO BE LINKED TO BE ANY GOOD TO ME... understand? TO ME!
TO ME! Getting it yet? TO ME!!!!! No im not speaking for anyone but ME!!!!
TO MEEEE!!!!!!!! Unless someone else here agrees...

And i hated PSO.... PSU looks a little better.. though i still can not tell if it has Motavians or dezorans.. obviously has newmans.. and i hated all the light weapons.. PSO i played through as much as i could handel playing through and could not find any metal like weapons.. everything was light saber like wepons, and it got anoying.

Plus im old fashion.. in fact im told that im a dieing breed cause i like turned based battles in RPGs.. i hated FF12 cause i could not relax and think out what i was going to do to attack next.

Now, you can dissagree all you F'ing want.. but TO ME it is not a real PS game and should have had a diff title, get T F over it.
I want a real sequal... and i know for fact im not the only one..... i guess thats why im making a homebrew... it is the only way i can get a sequal.
(BTW, i posted some screen shots in the fan section.)

And im mainly talking about IGN.. those people need help.. and Xplay can kiss my X ass.

All i want is one link.. some kind of link.. like someone could say.. our people many many years ago came from a star system called Algo.. thats it.. that alone would help.. i just want a link between the games.

And i was mad back in the day when the saturn version of the PS Colletion was released... i think another good thing they could do is enhance the audio more.. music and SFX could be updated a bit.. maybe update PS1 to be more 16 bit..yeah right i know lol. not happening.

Well im not worried about better graphics more gore more what ever.. i just want games fun long and not too hard.

BTW... where can i get PSU for PC?

I would hardly call their Wonder Boy collection, their Dragon Force re-release with extra scenes and cleaned-up graphics, and their NiGHTS re-release with cleaned-up graphics + the original version, poor.

Sega Ages started out as a hackjob, but once they stopped remaking games, they started releasing great collections with enhancements and extras.

The Saturn collection didn't have a difficulty setting. Who knows what else they stuck in there. We'll see when it has been released.

I just think that the Phantasy Star compilations are a little overdone as of late. The titles themselves are pushing, well you saw it, 20 years and other than IV, I don't know who (outside of the die hard fanbase) would sit through an incredibly difficult and arguably dated title like Phantasy Star 2.

Sega Ages deserves the props for doing the remakes that they did, and actually catering to the classic fans of classic games. Yes, I agree to that, but I strongly believe that no combination of added nick-knacks, fast walking options or music compilations (songs of which were mixed over 10 years ago) will provide fans with anything new.

To do the series any justice, for hardcore fans or the casual gamer, they need to take the development seriously. Universe was close.

I agree with whoever said it though. Sega is scared, and with the merger there are far too many cooks in the kitchen right now. My personal hope is that the creative minds aren't too diluted by the time our friends at Sega Sammy get themselves out of the massive debt they still face.

I did at another fourm too. Although, I didn't even yell or flame or anything like that. Jerks... I'm glad this place is different! :P

I also rather enjoy the old 16bit games with good plots and characters rather than the new ones with 3D grapics and insane disgusting gore. One of the main reasons why I only play Japanese games and not American ones.

PSO didn't really have anything to do with PSI-IV plot wise but it was still a good side story. I haven't played PSU yet so I can't judge it. Wasen't there a remake for PSI and PSII? Sorry if this was already asked but I've seen a lot of this on the web and may have missed it here:
http://ps2.ign.com/articles/601/601635p1.html

As for game reviewers, most of them are infact jealous jerks. Especially the American ones reviewing Japanese games. I don't even bother with reviews any more. I prefer RPGs and strategy games to sports, FPS and others. Classic Japanese rpgs like Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star IV have a certain appeal to them. The story, characters, music, enemies, etc. Where as the typical American ones don't (at least to me anyways).

I don't really care so much about remakes as a lot of elements are usally lost but I guess a remake of a great classic rpg on a more modern and advance system would be nice. That's how I see it.

Thanks Seizaku for getting it right.

I'd just like to sum up my post, there is no point in a release with bonus because we already got that on saturn and now it is rather cheap and pointless to give us the same old thing.

As you said Benoit, the ideas I was writing are cheap (the village thing with bonuses, little games with each characters and stuff) that is why I was saying that it would be the least they could do for a 20th anniversary : put on some dressing. Wrap up the games with a nice menu.

There, on PS2, it seems we won't even have those cheap things I'm talking about (those things showing the developpers at least cared a little about what they are selling to us).

If they just give us the 4 games we've already played and bought 4 times on every exsting consol with raugh bonuses like on the title screen saying
"-play PSI or II or III or IV"
"-option"
"-bonus"
that will not be called even a "cheap thing"... That will just be lame.

And I understand your point of view mike.

It's like for Star wars. If a film of science fiction with no "death star" no skywalker, no empire, no bubba fet, no yoda, no chewbakka or ewok no force and no jedi were to claim to be a star wars movie... That just wouldn't feel right even if we say there is still robots and sci fi.
Moreover, if we were to say that there is a guy named hannakin who is the president of the colony, fans wouldn't see that as an homage, but much more like an insult.
Moreover, if we were to take something unique and rare from star wars (like yoda) and if we were to say that there are millions of master yoda, it would lose its charm.
that's pretty much what happened with the newmans of PS serie.

Then I won't blame sega for making PSO and PSU. PSO was a good game to play and I won't speak for PSU since I could only play offline.
Finaly I think game reviewers are pretty honest when they do their job but people have different tastes.

Sega Ages started out as a hackjob, but once they stopped remaking games, they started releasing great collections with enhancements and extras.

Oh, sure, like Monaco GP remake that looks like a game I have on my cellphone?

And that many of those games older games that really have graphics updated are in the quality of something on Saturn or PSone when released on a console that is more powerful (like After Burner remake looking inferior to Air Combat - the first entry on ace combat series - with crappy controllers, and PSG1&2 that look like a bastard child of random dating-sim/hentai game with saturn rpg that could be made on RPG maker XP)?

Few games really got an good overall upgrade, like Hokuto no Ken, Golden Axe, then with Space Harrier compilation (vol 20) they started to being lazy, then a few more improved graphics and then from vol 25 onwards, nearly exact remakes, with just maybe a shader and texture upgrade on 3d games (like Virtual-On remake, that could really be improved to the quality of Virtual-on Marz but just got better textures and an increase on the number of polygons).

Now, when you get other producers and compare when they remake this and this into this, I believe that Sega is doing a poor job.

I beg to differ and think you're not even looking on good sites or good reviewer, really, try looking at sites like 1up.com that are composed of good reviewers and serious personnel, gamespot for games before june of 2007 (though even then I still take some reviews with a grain of salt) and when fully launched, the giant bomb (giantbomb.com) that is made from former gamespot personnel that left because gamespot marketing personnel poking the editorial people to change reviews and scores because of market agreements, they're serious person and I never met a game from them that I didn't liked.

I also prefer japanese rpgs, they have great games, but not everyone these days want and will get new games just for the sake of history, we're minority, we've grown with those games and got used with things like hardware limitation, we love them so much that we'll buy anything but those games but the newer generation wont, and they're the biggest market, and a producer will focus on them.

And I'll say, just because a game isn't 16-bit 2d games that they are crappy story-less games that sucks, look at Chrono cross, Suikoden III and V, Persona 3, Radiata Stories, .hack// series, Air tonelico, Arc the Lad, Shadow Hearts series, Star Ocean, Tales Series and Fire Emblem newer games. All great games that don't become inferior to any 8/16-bit (and that don't are also superior to any 8/16-bit), my guess is that fans are afraid that those old classics get forgotten because of the newer generation.

As I said, we're fans, we love Phantasy Star with dying passion, enough to some times overlook the producer poor job just because we love it too much and to curse them for a good game because it wasn't like we expected or though it should be *cough*Phantasy Star III*cough*First years of PSO*cough*Classical fanbase on PSU release.

Read my post again. I said it started as a hackjob, remaking games with a budget. After that, they started doing compilations of good quality.

Compilations. Not remakes. Compilations.

Apart from some extras, they only update 3D textures to be more refined and have more polygons. That's it, and that's all you should expect. In light of that, your criticism is misdirected.

Actually not, if they wanted to shift the focus of the work from remakes do compilations why don't just change the brand from Sega Ages to something else so the buyers don't put their expectations on a product based on the previous entries?

Because the brand has already been established, and is primarily about re-releasing older games. In that sense, it stays true to its roots.

I though that changes like those...

[Hokuto no Ken]
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t70/ ... d3f894.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t70/ ... 85a793.png

[Phantasy Star]
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t70/ ... 923cef.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t70/ ... d5de06.png

...made a remake, some cheap, others a little more expensive, but remakes anyway. And those games were published under a brand that started with the purpose of making remakes and only later got changed to a seiries of compilations that would be enough to change the brand they're going under, even when beacause the first of those compilations (vol 20) seemed completely out of place among the first 25 releases of Sega Ages.
