I'm interpreting what he's saying as the original titles had unity in their storylines; that's what made them such a great compilation of games. No other RPG's of the day (that I could think of) built a world that existed with continuity through an entire 4 titles.
While the names of techniques are the same and Rappys are still around, the magic of an cohesive world that Phantasy Star so eloquently created is gone.
PSU is like a grandparent with alzheimers. They look similar, they might even sound similar but they aren't the same person you knew or loved.
