The Phantasy Star Pronunciation Thread!

Postby Tanith » Wed Dec 28, 2011 6:12 am

Out of curiosity, I'd like to compare the way we pronounce Phantasy Star words. Share as little or as many as you'd like!

I'll start with the PSII Dezo "dungeons."

Menobe - meh-NO-bee ("no" pronounced like "slow")

Guaron - GWAR-uhn

Ikuto - ih-KOO-too

Naval - NAY-vuhl (Though part of me would like to pronounce it nuh-VAHL, I have to be honest and say that when I first played the game I pronounced Naval the same as the English word and it stuck.)

I pronounce everything the way you do, Amy, with the exception of Naval. That one, I pronounced nuh-vahl.

As a callback to the first PS word we discussed - Ehl-seh-dee-uhn.

Also, Aiedo = aye-dough for me.

Just wondering, where do you put the emphasis in Elsydeon and Aiedo?

I go back and forth on the pronunciation of Elsydeon. Right now I'm currently favoring el-SIH-dee-uhn because it sounds similar to obsidian.

Aiedo is aye-EE-doh for me.

Very interesting ! And I think that the more interseting will be to see how it is pronounced through the nationality of the members ;) Me I'm french but it depends also of the english language "level" :)

I pronounce everything the same way Amyith does.

The Gi-techniques - hard G or soft G? I admit to being completely inconsistent here. Gifoie, Gizan, Githu, and Gisar (and the PSO techs of Gizonde and Gibarta) are hard Gs for me. Gires and Giwat are soft Gs. I bet I left something out.

Let's see...

Hard G:
Githu
Gifoi
Gires
Gizan
Gisar

Soft G:
Giwat

What about the satellites?

Zelan = ZEE-luhn (like Zealand without the d)
Kuran = koh-RAHN (like the holy text)
Gaira/Gaila = Oddly, Gaira I pronounce GUY-rah, because it's close to the goddess Gaia, but Gaila I pronounce GAY-lah, because I immediately see the word "gail."

So, I I see this thread hasn't been active for a while but it's near the top of the page still so... I misread the name of Aiedo when I first got there so I still find myself pronouncing it "AYE-dee-oh." Actually, I think I might be a little sysdexlic because I originally read Elsydeon as Elysdeon. Just saying.

Clearly the sword's name is meant to be pronounced Selyndeon (sel-EEN-DEE-on).

I should learn the pronounciation alphabet sometime as it's really awkward to relate these in English.

*snort*

Also, if I remember correctly, back in the day, Rika's name was up for debate. I go with REE-ka. And Alis and Alys are pronounced the same for me (like Alice).

Holy crap! I just realized, looking at Shen's pronunciations, that it's not spelled Xanafluge! I've been reading that word wrong for 15 years now!

And I pronounce Rika "REE'-kah" as well (I've always seen it as a nickname for Fredrika). And Alys is Alice, yep.

*busts up laughing and sel-EEN-DEE-on*

What about Tiem? When I first played the game, I pronounced it "teem," but these days I give it an extra syllable, so it's "TEE-em."

I must pronounce stuff totally differently!

Menobe - Men-Obie

Guaron - Gurr-juan

Ikuto - ah-kuu-toe, you know, like a' kewl toe, that dude has a' kewl toe, it got a picture of his momma on it!

Naval - NAY-vuhl<--- Agreed

Aiedo = aye-dough <--- Agreed

Elsydeon. Eli-sigh-deon

Rika's name was up for debate. Rii-ka

Teim Tee-Em

I dunno squat though, I grew up calling Bahamut Bay-He-Mut, then I played FF12 an it turns out it's bah-he-mit... WHY SPELL IT LIKE THAT THEN!?

I've played Phantasy Star IV in Japanese up to and including the Air Castle, if memory serves me correct. Hence, I'm fairly certain on how some names are pronounced. For those where I'm sure, I'll put up the name in Katakana, because I can.

So, gonna plow through the most debated words used so far...

Menobe - me-NOBE

Guaron - GOO-ah-ron

Naval - na-VAHL

Ikuto - EE-koo-toh

Aiedo - a-EE-doh (アイード (aiido) in Japanese)

The tech prefix "Gi" - the G is pronounces as in "God" (ギレスタ (gi-resta) - If it were pronounced like the letter G, it'd be ジレスタ (ji-resta))

Zelan - ZAY-lahn (ゼラン (zeran) in Japanese)

Kuran - KOO-rahn (クラン (kuran) in Japanese)

Gaira - GUY-rah (ガイラ (gaira) in Japanese)

Elsydeon - el-si-DAY-on (I pronounce the syllable "si" like "sim" sans the "m")

(Damn, I wish I could actually write the pronounciation alphabet with my keyboard. Some of those descriptions are still a bit ambiguous.)
