Phantasy Star Generations, where can you get it?

Where can you buy this game? I see it a lot on here, but where can you pick it up?

  • eBay? Probably.
  • Craigslist? ...who knows.
  • Local 2nd-hand store? Not unless you're really lucky.

The Phantasy Star Generation games are Japanese only. You can try NCSX or other good import stores.

Why didn't they translate it and brought it to the US? Wouldn't Sega have made any money off of it? My brother has both of em on his shipped PS2 but they are not playable since they are only in Japanese :?

Sega probably thinks it wouldn't be worth the investment. There are licensing issues with Sony as well. Read more.

Thanks Benoit The link you've provided explained everything I was wondering. It's such a shame that they won't be translated because I'm sure most of us wanted to play them.

Is there someone out there translating them? I mean will there be a rom hack of both of them with English translation?

Some people in the Brazilian community are working on translating the games to Portuguese. With their help an English translation will also see the light of day. :)

Just a quick counterpoint here. That link isn't fully correct, or at least the wording could be better.

The 'Phantasy Star Generation' titles were not rejected for being 'low quality,' it was actually because SCEA had a well-documented reputation for rejecting most if not all 2D games at the time (PSG1 came out in August of 2003 and PSG2 came in March of 2005, from memory). SCEA's practices actually crippled Working Designs, who was known for doing high quality work, among others.

I had spoken to Tiffany W. at Conspiracy Entertainment back in 2004 about the whole debacle, and she had stated that SCEA refused to evaluate PSG1 for licensing approval outright because it was a single 2D game. Conspiracy then decided on the 'Trilogy' format, as SCEA was more willing to review compilation titles, but since PSG2 was delayed many times and PSG3/PSIV never materialized due to reorganization of the 3D AGES venture, those plans were ultimately not successful. The rights reverted back to Sega, who did the single low-selling compilation and (to my knowledge) never planned on touching the Phantasy Star titles because of the expense of localizing them.

Err, you were the one who corrected me back when I wrote it, when I wrote that SCEA rejected it because of the games being 2D.

I heard there's a guy in the SA Let's Play community who might do a LP translation of PS1G sometime in the future.

I think you're remembering incorrectly, but it was almost five years ago. Here:

http://pscave.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... ow+quality

A quick search brought up that old post which shows that isn't the case at all. Sorry.

In any case, the chances of localization are slim to none after all these years. Moreover, the games are both out of print, so your best bet to finding copies would be Japanese auction sites. You'll have to know the language though to communicate adequately in most cases and more often than not you'll need a Japanese shipping address or a proxy service like Celga.

Good luck!

No problem. Though I still don't get where the "low quality" statement you're still using is coming from. From what I was told, the other games that Conspiracy held the rights for weren't even submitted to SCEA for licensing approval (though that could be wrong, I admit my focus was on the Phantasy Star titles, since aside from Dragon Force those are the only ones I had an interest in), but if it took me five years to get that one sentence changed I guess I should just call it a day ;p

Well, someone said that low quality was a reason, and if it's not the reason for the 2D games, it probably was for the 3D games. After all, they put 3D games in the Sega Classics Collection as well, instead of releasing them separately.
