Techniques for wielding a longsword are not quite remarkable taking into account those swords' sharphess were so very POOR, to the point that in the middle of battle you ended up blunting your enemy to death with your so-called longsword, in comparison to the more refined arts of modern fencing or kendo, which is what is more likely used for wielding an energy blade: Winner: ROLF
Combat Experience:
In spite of having enjoyed a more complete training, having lived in a peaceful period in Algo's History until the bio-monster outbreak, Rolf only had one turn at monster hack and the "demon of the week", then he died at Noah, while Adol eats war-mongering, world-conquering demons and evil wizards for breakfast on a yearly basis. Winner: ADOL
Medieval Fantasy vs Sci-Fantasy:
The palmans of the Algo star system had already attained psionics as an average, hence everyone but Rudo and Shir possessing "techniques" (only the Espers were refered to as possessing "magic"), besides them possessing the benefits of hi-tech, while Adol lived in a world or sword and sorcery, having access to all sort of magical goodies and impossible miracles. On one side, Adol's magic would freak Rolf at first, but he is able to counter anything thrown at him; and on the other side, there's little or nothing Rolf's gadgets and psionics can do that Adol hasn't seen by now[u]Winner: TIE[u]
If we were counting "points" then it would be a "tie". However.... as anybody knows, there's no teacher like experience so, when all is said and done, combat experience is what separates the wheat from the chaff in the battlefield. Rolf is a lucky "commonman's hero" of his world, but Adol is a fighting machine... so on a first encounter Adol is much more likely to kill Rolf than otherwise.

I agree except that you have to remember in the end of Ys games, Adol doesn't wield your basic Long sword, he attains some magical blade of doom. ......and if youre counting Ys VI...the Emel swords in that at level 11 power, are something no-one should want to be smacked down with. But, yes it would be a tie considering Pts. .....and yes, Adol would probably know how to handle himself vs. another human, more so then Rolf would...Adol has seen more battle then Rolf. Itd be like pitting me vs. a Marine, Id get punched out in .3 seconds and go "pwn3d"
Huzzah
