Well, if you want to get technical, American English is just an older version of English. A few hundred years ago in England they would have written "recognize" and "armor" etc, and since the English that became Americans and the English that stayed here parted ways, the English language changed dramatically. American English kept the original spellings. Now in England (and for ages passed) it's written "recognise" and "armour".<p>I know this because of all the foreign students I've met that have learnt English through American teachers who have told them this, in preparation for them being shocked at discovering two different sets of spelling the same language, not to mention the two different sets of slang.
