Y's returns!!!

Postby zoothe » Mon Aug 02, 2004 10:58 pm

It's an Action/RPG series that has been around for quite a while. Y's 1 was released the Master System (in the US... I'm sure elsewhere as well), a 16 bit remake of 1 and 2 called Y's Book I & II was released on TGx16-CD as well as the third game Wanderers From Y's (Which was also released on both Genesis and SNES). The fourth game was on SNES. As for part 5, I dunno. But part 6 (the latest) was released on PC in Japan and later ported over to PS2 there. Konami is now bringing over a US release for the PS2. There was also a PS2 remake of Y's I & II but there hasn't been word on a US release.
Keep in mind, my knowledge of this series is limited as the only one I actually own is Y's III for Genesis. I have played some of the other ones too, though. As for the series' life over in Japan, I know ill-intent knows all about that. Ill, please correct me if I made any errors. Also, there is more on Y's in this thread:
http://pscave.com/cgi-bin/board/cutecast.pl?session=5GxuTYE193uTXx8jMHYeH5Vxww&forum=15&thread=233
Hope that helps.

So far as the remakes go. They've been out for the PC long before they translate to PS2 and even on PC, they only have remakes for 1, 2, 3 and 6. (6 being a new game and not a remake, but anyway....) As for PS2, 3 is coming out in Japan in March. A set date in that month has yet to be given and they have already pushed it back several times (it was originally supposed to be out last year).
Considering that, I really doubt there will be a compilation disk here.
As for the new one, it's pretty damned good. Short, but pretty good. (I played it last year on PC) The best of them was 1&2 (as a set, the remake is good and the PC engine one was great) and then 4 (the PC engine version). 6, admittedly, is behind them.

ill-intent: do you know if the Ys III remake coming in March is going to have many changes? Considering that it's mostly an action game, I figured I'd be able to play it not knowing Japanese. I have the Genesis one and thought I'd play it once again first and then have my hand at the remake.
I *never* got to play 1 & 2 because I never had a TGX16. Nor did I get to play Ys 4 (never had an SNES -- anyone have the ROM?) I really wish they'd bring a 1-3 compilation to the US.
All the wishing aside, Ys VI will beout in the US on my birthday next month so I'm looking forward to that :)

[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1106543405[/TIME]]

Changes to 3? Most likely. The 1&2 remake had several changes to it (I've played it on pc and bought the PS2 version). There was an extra area added to the map to cover the story BEFORE he reaches Minnea. (if you played the old master system part 1, it's the story they wrote in the instruction book) They also did some gameplay "tweeking" to make the game more interesting to play. With that in mind, aside from the massive graphic upgrades, the 3rd one should have something. I've already seen in screenshots that it zooms in for certain moves against bosses, etc.... But specifics, nope don't know.
I'll let you know when I get it. ('cause I will break down and get it)

I just downloaded the SNES version of Wanderers. I figured I'd check it out and see if I noticed any differences between it and the Sega one.
I actually rented the SMS version of Y's a looooooonnnnnnggggg time ago and never made it that far. I don't even think it came with the instruction manual :P
I think I might break down and get the PS2 version anyways and just give it a shot. It'd be a nice addition to my ever growing RPG collection if nothing else. Plus, I loved the music of Y's III, so I'd like to hear the new versions.
I actually ordered the Y's I & II LE box set for PS2 a few days ago. It was on SUPER sale on Play-Asia (actually cheaper than the game by itself by $10). Dunno if I'll get very far, but don't really care either.

Unfortunately, compared to the old PcEngine version, the newer remakes have worse music (except in cinema sequences). The PcEngine/TurboGraphX ones had CD music tracks with real instruments (some) where as these PS2 remakes are kind of a translation of the PC music. Relying on PS2 midi hardware is never impressive.... >sniff<
The box set, eh? It's cool! Comes with a little diarama with the 4 main characters in bottle top cover format. (Adol & his 3 babes) I've got that setup sitting on the dresser I store my games in.
Now, I KNOW I'm sounding nerdy.......

Well, (correct me if I'm wrong), weren't they both part four? Dawn of Y's on PC and Mask of the Sun on SNES.....? I don't really know much about those ones though.

You can't have two part IV's though O.o
It makes the already screwed up continuity even worse!
Especially with the genesis/TG version of YS 3 using Demanicus, and SNES using "Galbalon"

Well, there's no denying that two part fours is screwed up...
It's like when Namco released Tales of Eternia in the US under the name Tales of Destiny 2 only to doom any hopes for the *real* Tales of Destiny 2 (for the PS2) to ever see the light of day (in the US).

What's even more screwed up is..
YS 5: Sand City of Kefkin needed a EXPERT VERSION!
So there is a easy, and a expert version..
WTF is up with that?
P.S. I edited it and changed it. I had the name wrong.
[Edit by Lord Khyron on [TIME]1106709597[/TIME]]

Zeograd's emu "Hu-Go" runs TG-CD's.
In fact, Sourcefire was using it.
I believe it was Hugo..
Or you could use the newest Magic Engine..

As to the Ys 4 question. Dawn of Ys (the PC Engine version) is about Adol returning to Esteria after his wanderings and finding out more about Ys' origins before the black pearl (as well as what has happened in his absence). It has direct story references and continuations for the first 2. As far as I've heard (I can only say "heard" as I've never played it all the way through, just the first town and some of the fields), Mask of the Sun is a shortened, simplified version of the same story. They don't go as much into Ys' origins so they changed the title.
As to 5, I'm not surprised they did an upgrade. 5 wasn't that great. (well, the SNES one wasn't, anyway) 3 sorta did the same. The afore mentioned SNES/Genesis versions of 3 had a second boss form to kill and an overall higher difficulty level to the game then the PC engine. (advanced?)
