Most 'hacking' done on consoles isn't through editing your save file. So the server-side saving doesn't matter that much. Well, it does matter on the PC, because there they did alter the save file, since it was just on the hard disk, and you could have programs edit it, which you can't on the GameCube itself.<br>So, for PC it's a good move. But it doesn't matter much on consoles.
