The actual State of Taiwan was created after the communist revolution. In 1949, Mao Tse Tung defeated the former republican government of the Kuomintang (the Republican Party that governed China since the fall of the imperial regime, in 1911). The remains of the Kuomintang (two millions of refugees, including their leader Chiang Kai-shek) fled to Taiwan, where they founded a new government and declared themselves independent from the rest of China. Continental China, however, never accepted this and never recognized the independence of Taiwan, considering it a rebel chinese province. <p>Taiwan promptly gained the support from the occident, which protected them from a final blow from China. China, in another hand, was backed up by USSR, so no one dared to interfere on the chinese affairs. The "unstable balance" kinda crystalized Taiwan and China as different countries. Under different governments, the two countries developed different social, economical and political characteristics, being China an entropically communist country and Taiwan mostly an exporting industrial country. Politically, Taiwan´s position got seriously weakened when the US decided to recognize the communist governemtn from continental China as the only official government of that country, finishing with the aspirations of the Kuomintang of getting back to Beijing. The actual situation in the island is quite chaotic. I see quite frequently on TV how the taiwanese politicians solve their differences (with chairs, food and any other objects thrown at each other :^P)<p>The balance still exists today. China became the second most powerful country of the world, militarly speaking, a fair match to United States. Like during the Cold War, they wouldn´t risk themselves in a highly destructive war that would end up with no winners. China is aware of this, and so is the US. China may use diplomacy (which would be more simple than it looks, as Taiwan is not recognized as an independent country by other countries) to try to take Taiwan back with international support instead of invading the island and dealing with a possible american counter attack.<p>There´s no need for worries.

I want a "Liberal Commie Pinko" t-shirt! it'd kick ass! any of you can call me a liberal, communist, or a pinko at any time <p>i'm a registered republican and believe my party ran away from me into some whacked out neuroses of millelialists, dominionists, and corporate fascists out to conquer the world. completely antithetical to their roots. heretics i say! !@#$ <p>that said, china would have a rough go of it, their navy isn't as powerful as ours, especially compared to our sub capabilities. if can't get on taiwan mainland, then can't hold taiwan/ but, a war with china would be profoundly stupid. it'd be better to tell taiwan's provocative group to stand down holding the treat of american protection as the persuasive factor. but then... we haven't the most tactful, smart, or strategic bunch of people in power, to put it kindly. but then it has been publicly stated that we prefer the status quo in the taiwan situation, so who knows, they might do the smart thing.<p>besides, our military is about at its breaking point. even high up officials in US military are basically saying so, in not so many words. unfortunately the young republicans are not signing up for these wars they are so gung ho for (i, myself, think it's foolhearty and downright dangerous to our national security), so we're in a real crisis that's just barely being kept quiet from our sycophantic media in america.<p>it's as if a huge portion of america and the entire gov't administration has never heard the concept of "don't bite off more than you can chew." oh well, just waiting for the bottom to drop out of the dollar...<p>ps: you can call me pinko commie liberal, too, or some mix thereof. or godless heathen or unwashed infidel if you wish
