Has anybody played the Phantasy Star remake(sega ages) on PS

I would have bought a PS2 just to play the remake if I didn't already own one. The remake does not suck. No more explaination needed.

I'll agree with Benoit. I don't like the remake.
Let me explain. PS1 was an old school RPG. Old school RPG's are renowned for being very unforgiving, and also for relying strongly on good play mechanics and levelling up, not a bunch of gimicks like moogles and creature summoning. Story was important, but not over-emphasized like it is in so many FF games with hours of cut-scenes. Art panels (oh, I wish they'd use these now ) and a bit of character dialogue was as close as it got to being a cut-scene.
Then the remake, takes all these things away, the things that makes it beautiful and an old-school RPG, one that stood the test of time. It adds a bunch of boring conversations, and adds a bunch of useless gimicky stuff, to put the PS1 remake in somewhere in between a good, new RPG and a good old RPG.
For a remake to be good, it would have to add onto the basics first, and keep what the game originally had, not take it away.

Elements alone don't make it a PS game. PS1-4 were all the same type of RPG. PSO is nowhere close to that style of game. You go through years of playing these games that all have a similar formula and all have a storyline that closely (not loosely) connects them and then you have this PSO come out and it's NOTHING like the other four game and you wonder why I don't think it a PS game?
[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1081370278[/TIME]]

So a game is only Phantasy Star if it resembles the other Phantasy Star games and has ties to it?
That's ridiculous.
What makes a game Phantasy Star is featured in PSO. 'nuff said.

It adds a bunch of boring conversations, and adds a bunch of useless gimicky stuff, to put the PS1 remake in somewhere in between a good, new RPG and a good old RPG.

I have to take your word for it since I am not able to read what's going on, but with that, I have a few questions:
What's the bigger problem here: Story, dialogue, or translation? Because I feel that each is very different.
Like I said, I can't read wha't being said in the game, but the story has to be intact for the most part if I'm able to go through it based only on my knowledge of the originals story. Am I wrong? Is the story blatantly changed?
As for dialogue, if it's bad it's bad and that's all there is to it, but I also have to think that only a *literal* translation of this Japanese remake would result in the same dialogue. I tend to believe that a good localization process can take care of problems like "boring dialogue". Do you think that it's possible?
Finally, with regards to translation; I remember the disjointed feeling the entire series had because of bad tranlations that never seemed to fit together. We English speaking gamers could only accept what was put in front of us at the time. Could it be now, that a closer translation for us would make the story and/or dialogue different enough from the original English release that we will not accept it?
As for what you said about the use of gimmicks to give the game a more "present day" feel to it, I say this: The crystals seem pointless yes, and the Atlas item only makes the dungeons easier. But I don't really see any other addition of "gimmicky" gameplay here. I have noticed a couple things *missing* that in a way are gimmicky (mostly because you don't see these options in a lot of RPG): the option of "talking" to your enemies (though they might have included it in magic, I don't know since I can't read it), and the option of opening or not opening treasure chests after battles. Basically, I don't feel that any of the additions really detract from the game all that much, if at all. The only thing that I feel *really* hurts this remake is it's lack of difficulty. So I ask: What are the "basics" missing from this remake?

[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1081371700[/TIME]]

Don't just add better graphics and a few little "frills".

Basically, I don't feel that any of the additions really detract from the game all that much, if at all. You're right about the difficulty (this alone makes the remake hard to like) but what about the dialogue? The dialogue takes away your ability to go wher ever you like and do things in which ever order you like. Thing like that.

I agree that the difficulty alone is a real big drawback to the remake. Ultimately though, I think that in my personal case, the game would have had to be the crappiest game ever made, EVER, for me to not like it. It's close enough to the original (for me) to make it enjoyable. I agree, a remake having vast improvements is a great thing, but how can you really improve on the original PS? A graphics and sound upgrade is all I'd need to make it acceptible. At this point, I'm just hoping the US translation is decent and that we actually get to see the PS2 and PS4 remakes as well. Even if they get worse, I'll still collect them all... I love PS just that much ;)
Benoit, can we just drop the PSO thing? It's getting old.

[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1081382927[/TIME]]
