- Sega revealed that NiGHTS into Dreams for PS2 will not be released in US.

From http://www.the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm

That's sad.. I was so looking forward to the new levels!

Which new levels? It's just a port of the Sega Saturn game.

This is good news to me. Now the ungrateful Western people that doomed the Sega Saturn back in the day won't get to play it unless they import.

No.. the game was going to have new levels in it.

A post on Magic Box a few months ago said so. I'll find it for you.

Sega is releasing a remake of the game for the PlayStation 2, set for release in Japan February 21, 2008. It will include 16:9 wide screen support, both a classic Sega Saturn mode and a PS2 remake mode, an illustration gallery and a movie viewer mode. The game will be available for a budget price, or the Nightopia Dream Pack, which includes a picture book

It will also include the Christmas version as well. Not exactly a port..

They abandoned it. They didn't neglect it. It did quite well for a while.

Europe? Are you kidding? It was PSX all the way. No one liked the Sega Saturn.

Well, we have to admit that if only Sega Saturn had the heavy titles in the beginning... If they had a FFVII things would have been different now.

I mean come on, no phantasy star on saturn, no streets of rage, sport game weren't here either and did you see the sonics... (I didn't see any awesome sonic since sonic III on megadrive (the II being the best of course))

It got way better afterwards but it was too late, Sony already had its Wipeout, Tekken, FFVII, TombRaider, crashbandicoot, soulege, Fifa... and so many more.

Sony was just far more persuasive when it came to ask other editors to publish their game on PS.

WTF?
sport game weren't here

They were there, just not large in number. You had Sega's Virtua Soccer series, which at the time rivalled the FIFA series. You had Steep Slope Riders, and a couple more.
Wipeout

Also came out on Saturn. I own it.
TombRaider

First came out on Saturn. In fact, it was originally a Sega 32X project.
Sony was just far more persuasive when it came to ask other editors to publish their game on PS.

Not true. The PSX was easier to program for, especially when it came to 3D. They got better results faster. Also, the PSX was 100 bucks cheaper than the Sega Saturn initially, making for a larger installed base. Then you also had the huge marketing campaign, unprecedented in the video game industry at the time.

of course it did take awhile for the psx to catch on. took them a year to sell 1 million consoles in japan. If sega actually concentrated on marketing, brougth over more games to the us, and concentrated more on 3D games and not psuedo 3D pixelated graphics(which look shitty IMO) the saturn would've done a little better.

In Japan the PSX wasn't liked because Sony had stated that it didn't want RPGs on the system. Of course, with FFVII, that changed.

At the time heavy marketing like Sony did was unprecedented, so you couldn't really expect Sega to also do it.

Why exactly would you blame consumers for the Saturn tanking? It was Sega's fault. You can't expect the consumer to buy something that doesn't really cater to his/her interests, can you? Product loyalty on the basis of just a name is downright foolish (not to mention fanboyish).

They were there, just not large in number.

That's the thing, though. If I like RPGs, and there's a console that has a lot of RPGs and another that has only a few, I'd likely take the console that has more RPGs, because it's obvious that that particular niche is being supported. In the case of the Saturn, even if there were sports games it wouldn't matter to sports game fans unless they knew that there would continue to be sports games for them to play. Small numbers do not really mean support, do they?

As for marketing, granted that Sony had a huge marketing campaign, but the Saturn's marketing campaign was rather negligible even by previous standards in the industry. Besides, all the money thrown into marketing won't do a bit of good unless it's done well. Had Sega done their marketing properly, it's possible that the Saturn could've had a longer run.

Because they are the ones who decide whether a game console tanks or not with their money.

The Sega Saturn had the better games, in my opinion.
