Next level of gaming: PS3->360->Wii. Which one?

I am a old school gamer so not much into the new generation of consoles. Which of the new consoles do you own and which on is prefered?

I enjoy the concept of Wii but never tried it to be honeest.

Well, I own a Wii, and it has, so far, exceeded all my expectations. I picked up on my birthday (four days ago) and have been rather blown away. I chose to get it for a number of reasons, not the least among them being Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but I did not expect to get such a good experience. Maybe I was just a little underwhelmed because of the Gamecube.

Super Mario Galaxy is awesome. It took me a while to "get" it, but once I did, I started having a lot of fun. Metroid Prime 3 is also great... it expands on the lore of the series so much, and I think it'll be the best of the series. Of course Twilight Princess is great (though I bought it for the GC), so that's a solid choice too. Basically, incredibly strong offerings from Nintendo's usual lineup.

Also, there seems to be a great deal of third party support. Unfortunately, a lot of that support is utter garbage and floods the market with awfully made casual games, but as long as you know what you're looking for, the third party support is quite good, and I think will only continue to get better.

If you're an old school gamer, then the Virtual Console would likely appeal to you. There's a definite solid lineup of games from multiple consoles (not just Nintendo) and we're even beginning to see games being released on VC that were previously Japan exclusive. Yes, the other two consoles have download games, but they simply can't compete with the Virtual Console.
The Virtual Console was the one of the biggest reasons for me buying a Wii.

The PS3 and 360 both have great things to offer (even though the PS3 seems to be off to a slow start in terms of games that are actually worth playing), and I'm sure will have great futures. For now, however, the combination of price, game lineup, and Virtual Console make the Wii a pretty reasonable choice.

For you old-school gamers, it should interest you that Phantasy Star II was added tot he virtual console.

I also have a Wii and have to side with Laco, Nintendo's games are very impressive and fun to play.

The third party support is hit and miss, you have to really look around at reviews to make sure you are getting a good one. Some developers out there take advantage of the "uneducated" casual community and sell them crap because people will think anything for the Wii is awesome.

Metroid Prime 3, LoZ: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl. 4 Great reasons to get a Wii.

Other great games are SSX Blur, Trauma Center (Second Opinion and New Blood), Paper Mario, Zak and Wiki.

Don't forget No More Heroes, which is one of the reasons that I bought a Wii.

But Virtual Console is the way to go for oldschool gamers. Plus, if you ever hear somebody bitch about how the Wii isn't "hardcore" enough, you can kindly direct them to Lord of Thunder for the TG-16 and watch them get their asses stomped.

No More Heroes is awesome. Saw a video review of it a week ago at a friend's. It's from the makers of Killer7.
But Virtual Console is the way to go for oldschool gamers.

I disagree, especially as a EU/PAL gamer.
  • The Genesis/Mega Drive emulator could use some work (where's Steve Snake?).
  • We're getting PAL versions of the games. PAL versions! Complete with slower speed because most developers back in the day couldn't be arsed to convert their games to PAL properly (very noticeable in Phantasy Star IV).
  • Some games are quite pricy considering how old they are.
  • Buying games I already own again to play them on the Wii's Virtual Console? No thanks.

i have the xbox 360 (haven't been able to get a hold of a wii yet <_< )

i like it a lot. but, it's a system that neeeeeeeds you to have a decent internet connection, because if you can't access LIVE it's frankly a boring system. even if you are only playing single-player games (and there are a lot) every game makes use of LIVE, even if it's something as simple as achievements. you miss out on a LOT if you don't use LIVE.

i haven't played the newest 'big' games out yet (Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Odyssey) but i've heard good things about them.

Benoit, I have downloaded Genesis games on VC and have never run into problems with the emulator. As for buying games you already own, you don't have to buy anything you don't want to buy. There's a huge selection, and I'm willing to bet that you haven't played all of them (especially since we're getting imports as well as TG-16 stuff even though the TG-16 never left Japan). I don't know, I don't think it's anything but a good idea for oldschool gamers.

It came state side. Started out good, but lacked third party games due to Nintendo. Kind of ironic now with TG16 on Wii.

I wont get into the virtual console, not with there being so many ways to just find ROMs.

Right, right, it was not released in Europe, but had a strong import community. I mixed that up with the NA release. My mistake.

Neo, as far as I'm concerned with ROMs, there's nothing that compares to playing the game on a console. Playing Shining Force on a computer, with the arrow keys and whatnot, is nothing compared the experience offered by the console... it could just be me, but I like playing with the controller in my hands. Besides, online I have to wade through adds and voting and porn to get the ROM I want, and even then it is of dubious quality in most cases. I don't know, having a Nintendo endorsed release as well as the chance to play the game on the console is worth the pittance that VC games cost, to me.

Couple nitpicks:
Playing Shining Force on a computer, with the arrow keys and whatnot, is nothing compared the experience offered by the console... it could just be me, but I like playing with the controller in my hands.

Who says you can't with the PC? I know I use a controller to play games.
Besides, online I have to wade through adds and voting and porn to get the ROM I want, and even then it is of dubious quality in most cases.

...Huh? You're going to the wrong places. There are only a couple ROM sites, and they're mostly free of that crap.

Any good rom sites dont have ya vote or force ads you to click or view many ads. If you have a pop-up blocker, all yo see are banner ads. Especially porn ads.
