Seen the Sega Ages 2500 page in the last while?

Postby Cherok » Sat Mar 22, 2008 8:11 am

End of this month guys and girls, we'll see all 4 plus some of the adventures compiled onto a release for the PS2. I can't begin to speculate how the Adventure titles will be done, but i'll make the assumption that 3 and 4 will get the same treatment 1 and 2 had.

Did anyone here import or play the PS2 remakes? Are they totally brutal to play through? :D

Yes, they're re-releases. But with some extras, like difficulty settings, more save slots, and a walking speed option like Phantasy Star Collection on the Saturn.

More importantly, there's an accompanying soundtrack collection! You can pre-order it at VGMWorld.

I've seen the screen shots. It's pretty updated and all that good stuff. Dunno if I would call it a full remake, but it's definently on my "to-buy" list.

Updated? They are the exact same games except for the couple options. A remake means updated graphics, a remixed/new soundtrack, and altered gameplay.

I've got it on preorder (the SegaDirect version, which includes the soundtrack and such). Per that site, it looks like the English versions will be in the collection as well of PSI-IV.

Too bad it'll be the same old translation :P

Oh, I must have been thinking Sega Generations. Try looking up that one. They have redone PS - 1 & 2 so far.

Yeah, I noticed afterwards when I translated the page. Is it just me or do you guys think that Sega could be going about the revival of its classics in a lot more productive way.

They missed the boat already on brining back alot of their flagship 16-bit era franchises, but plain old re-releases of the same set of games that was re-released on the GBA is hardly what I consider effort.

Not quite. Phantasy Star Generation: 1 and Phantasy Star Generation: 2 are both entries in the Sega Ages line (Vols. 1 & 17 respectively). Originally, the Sega Ages line was for budget remakes, but eventually became a series of retro-anthology releases.

Anyone else thinks that aside from the soundtrack release, this sega ages release is kinda pointless since it could well come with genesis collection (with the exception of PSI, of course), or released for download by PSN?

I mean, if they had upgraded the games to the level of PSG1&2 but just enchanheced ports... =_= it feels like just did it to not let the 20 birthday of the series unnoticed.

This re-release screams of a bunch of slackers with no real direction for a series trying to make a quick buck on loyal fans.

Sega's a total mess.

Considering how Sega Ages' re-releases are top-notch and always contain extra options, I disagree strongly. Compilations like Wonder Boy are great, and the NiGHTS re-release is awesome.

I would agree with you Benoit if it wasn't for the PS release on Sega Saturn which was the release we were waiting for with all elements a fan was waiting for.

Now we have to see that after PS saturn, PS serie got re-released on GBA, then re-re-relased through the sega megacollection and now just has another re-re-re-relase for its 20th birthday?!!

(And yet I didn't mentioned the virtual consols on Wii or Xbox.)

I wish they could make a little effort like adding some extra little minigames (bonus game in flash) or for example making a village phantasy star style where you could meet and talk to all the PS char each and everyone of them being able to either give you an access to a mini game or talk to you about their feelings, and how they saw the adventure plus telling you about some side event that happened to them.

Then having to go in a house to play a game like in shenmue or animal crossing.

I think that's about the least they could do for a 20th anniversary especialy in that case where the Sega saturn game was a good compilation already.

Here is what the problem is really.
Sega is scared, their executives are scared as well, they no longer want to take chances like they used to, after how the dreamcast did not make it in the market, they are scared to spend more money and make something better.

Personaly, if i was running sega right now, i would port PSG1 and PSG2 over to the Wii with special controls for battle and menu usage, i would also redo a few songs lol, not all the remade songs on PSG 1 and 2 were all that great.

Then after doing that i would translate the games and bring them to the US.

I would also never make another online PS game again, i would go back and actualy make some sequals to the real series.
I would also fix the sonic series, just cause a game is 3D does not mean it has to be full roaming 3D, sonic as well as the PS series could have been in 3D only with fixed views.

Id also go back and give wonderboy the spotlight again as well.
I would also bring back Shining Force but not how they did the last one, i would stick with anime styled art as well for all their games, i would also start porting saturn games over into collections on the Wii with controls fit for the Wii mote...

In short SEGA could do a lot, they are scared though, plain and simple, so we will never get another good game from them again.
In fact the US rarely gets too many japan made games anymore but for a few we have been getting like Mario Sonic Zelda.. and so on.. but the majority of the US market is saturated in FPS games.. war games RTS games.. all made in the US, i miss the days when i could pick up a game magazine and drool over what japan was getting and what we might get, but now days when i pick up a game mag it is filled to the brim with US made games and articles.. i think the majority of japan game developers have given up on the US and other countrys so SEGA and NINTENDO respectively release what they know will sale... it is sad realy.

Personaly, im about to learn the japanese lingo just to import and play games from over there, im sorry but i hate sports titles and the sims and halo and all the so called RPGs and platformers that are made here in the US... okay im done with my rant.

SEGA, if you are listening, their are plenty of people left in the US that rather play games from Japan.. good games.. quirky games.. the kinds of games like we used to get a lot back in the day on the 8 and 16 bit consols.. please stop doing stupid crap and release something good.. and no not another online PS game unless you can truely link the storylines with the classic PS games...

Okay i have said my piece.. back to work on my fan game.

mikepjr, I agree with most of what you say. But, I also think that Sega also doesn't want to release PSG1 and PSG2 because of what happened the last time they ported Sega Ages games to the US.

I'm not sure how may of you remember this, but Sega released a US port of nine of the Sega Ages disks in one collection called (what else) Sega Classics Collection. Failure would be an understatement. It was a disaster. Both horrid reviews and very poor sales is what this game ended up with. And I think that this is why we may never see PSG1 or PSG2 state side anytime soon.

You can find more on this "game" here. http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/sega ... bs;reviews
