6 man parties are not massive. by your definition diablo was an mmo too. pso had lobbies and multiple servers around the world and it wasn't called an mmo.

Its an online RPG.

I play World of Warcraft and I have a Final Fantasy 11 account which I rarely use. On the free end of the spectrum, I play Orka Online and Risk Your Life 2.

I do not currently play any of the online Phantasy Star games.

PSU and PSO is a MMO by terminology, including by later console mmorpgs such as FFXI gameplay by console being kinda similar. If hundreds of people go to PSU, can interact with each other and eventually team up for doing some missions/quests, and do it by internet, then it makes it a MMO.

It may not be in your point of view, and then this way I'll respect, but in the broad sense it is a MMO, and is listed as such by specialized places such as MMOsite.

Diablo 2 had a PARTY LIMIT as well to the maps. To the games made and servers.

PSO/PSU is a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE game.

Certain users just like to consider that it has to be like EVERCRACK to be a MMORPG.

What a messed up point of reference. Letting evercrack be the comparison?

You wanna know something that'll blow your mind Hubbs?

LEGEND OF THE RED DRAGON was a MMORPG back in the day! Before graphics and on 1200 baud connections! You could have as many people as you wanted in the game.

OMFG.. What a concept!

WoW is a great MMORPG. PSO and PSU are great MMORPGs (at least, PSU BETTER F***ing be a great MMORPG or I'ma bash some Gamestop heads in). PSO AND PSU are both considered MMORPGs whether you like it or not. Go ahead. Look them up under that title.

Having said that,

I guess I've been on 666 posts long enough.

Seizaku, your definition makes any video game that has online connectivity an MMO.

I have to disappoint you and Khyron.
Wikipedia wrote:MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player CRPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game.

Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe do not have a persistent world. You also can't play in the same world with a party bigger than 4 and 6, respectively.

You'll notice that they aren't on Wikipedia's list of MMORPGs either. Here's why, according to the Talk page:
KentF on Wikipedia wrote:Actually, Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe only allow four or six players to play together, simultaneously. The lobbies, in which you can see other players outside of your party, are no more than visual chat channels (they are as if Diablo II had graphics in its chat channels). Thes two games, by no means, should be considered "MMO," simply because the multiplayer aspect is so limited in scope of player interactivity.

Oh Please, wikipedia!? I prefer to stick with MMOsite since those guys are professionals of the area and are much more qualified to classify something than random wikipedia people.

But I'd just like to point that while wikipedia don't classify it as MMORPG, it does classifies it as MMO.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's popular and cool to bash Wikipedia these days. But that doesn't automatically discredit all information coming from it. You'll have to take apart the points I raised.

The mention of Phantasy Star online in the MMOG article doesn't seem to fit:
Wikipedia wrote:MMOGs host a large number of players in a single game world, and all of those players can interact with each other at any given time.

Phantasy Star Online does not have a single game world, and it is not persistent. As soon as everyone leaves the party, that world vanishes. The principle of sharded worlds doesn't apply here either, since you have many of these separate worlds on every server.

And Phantasy Star Online is definitely an RPG, so if it's not an MMORPG, how can it be an MMO? Inconsistent.

The article even mentions that Diablo II is often mislabelled as an MMORPG, which PSO is at its core basically a 3D clone of.

And I could just as well argue that mmosite is also a site run by random individuals that call themselves experts, since I never heard of it before (which I probably would if they carried weight). :P

Sorry but in my area of expertise (history, that is what I study at college) I'm tired of noticing many inaccuracies and misstatements, and people from other areas (such as physics, biology, chemistry among others) have come to say the same thing about wikipedia. I take everything it says with a grain... or maybe a whole spoon of salt.

I dunno how much of a MMO player you are and how much you interact with the community but they're a major force on the subject, together with people from MMORpg.com. And in both mmosite (wait the page to load then ctrl+f for Phantasy Star) and MMORPG.com PSU is listed as MMO/MMORPG.

Sorry, but is the game producer that is actually mistaken or is based on your point of view they are mistaken? If it's the later ok, I respect, but don't try to force your opinion as fact that everyone should agree.

i'm not the one forcing my opinion on people here. But unfortunately it is fact that PSU by the definition of the word is not a MMORPG.

I already said twice that by stricto senso definition of the game is a MMO.

You play on a server that has hundreds of people connected at the same time that you can interact with making it Massive, that you can team up with some of those people and make missions/quests together (Multiplayer) trade items and etc, and you play by connected to a network making it Online, opposed to games such as Battlefield 1942 where you just have a few people spread among many non-centralized servers instead of just one central server, making BF42 Multiplayer and Online but not Massive.

And even if you want to think outside of the definition and bring in the conventions created for the genre, they aren't standard and can be changed as it have been made by Tabula Rasa, Taikodom, DANCE! Online, Pangya and many others.
