I bought a PS3

This is the first time ever I have bought a video game console/handheld that was not made by Nintendo.

I figured I would start here as far as finding friends goes.

I will admit that going from Wii component to PS3 HDMI is quite noticeable on an HD tv. Hopefully the PS3 exclusive library can hold up to Nintendo's track record (which I'm confident it will). Unfortunately it froze while I was using the browser the second day I had it...hopefully it wont do that again. Currently I only have Borderlands but I mainly bought the console because of DVD/Blu-ray playback, internet browsing apart from my laptop, and Gran Turismo 5 (assuming it will be released one day). I will likely also pick up NHL 11 eventually.

Anyone have recommendations for games? Preferably something you can't get on an Xbox 360 (because my roommate probably has it already. He hates sports games though) and something other than a war game.

Valkyria Chronicles (unless you consider that a "war game") and Demon's Souls are the two PS3-exclusive games I have heard the most about.

3 epic exclusives - Infamous (A man with electrical powers in a city during a quarantine so gangs take over, do you help save the city from thugs and bigger threats, or use your power to help yourself, karma style. Sandbox game, open world free running and deep epic story. Single player only.) LittleBigPlanet - (Need I saw any more, creative unique great on/offline) and then - Heavy rain (Intense, unique, epic, can be used with Move controller, and just amazing storyline with 22 diff endings). Also another thing worth looking into if you dare - SIREN BLOOD CURSE. Only for download outside of japan, Horrific, kinda gory survival horror game. Know to those to dare to play it as the scariest game ever. Basically abandoned japanese village + curse + Zombies + little girl in an abandoned hospital = epic. Nuff said. ADD MYPSN semixx

I guess what I meant by war games was the more realistic stuff. World Wars, middle east wars...that sort of stuff. I'm sure stuff like COD and MOH are fun, but we have way to many shooters at this house. I need to change it up every once in a way. The obscurity and humor of Borderlands has kept me hooked on it so far.

Call me picky...or maybe I just lose interest on things too quickly, haha.

LBP (LittleBigPlanet) was really fun when I played it with a few friends. :D I'd recommend some other games, but I'm not overly big on this console at the moment.

I'm surprised; there were a ton of fun games for the PSX and PS2. ^_^ I know the PS3 is backwards compatible with some PSX and PS2 games, but I think it's only the older models (other people's input is welcome; I've heard multiple things regarding this subject and what the PS3 can/can't do).

I believe only the really early consoles were backwards compatible. But that is okay, I don't have any games that I could use anyway.

Good games I recommend are Valkyria Chronicles (excellent rpg), the Bioshock games, Assassin's Creed II, GTAIV, Ninja Gaiden II, Prototype, God of War III, the Uncharted games, Call of Duty games, Yakuza 3, Street Fighter IV...

I'll edit this post again when I can think of others to suggest.

60gig = compatible with both ps1 and ps2 games

The newer models just stick with ps1.

Like, I said, multi-platform games are pretty much out of the question because I likely have access to them already. But, I will agree that games like bioshock, gtaIV, assassin's creed, SFIV are good.

I have had Uncharted recommended to me. And I suppose I shouldn't count out God of War III.



Thanks for all of the ideas. I checked out IGN's top 25 PS3 games list but I wanted to see what those who had PS3's other than editors thought. Looks like the consensus is pretty much the same. Of course this is a list of games far larger than what I can manage throughout the year so I'll let you folks know if I purchase any games down the road. Like I mentioned I am currently playing Borderlands and will be buying Gran Turismo 5. Those are probably the only places you will find me for some online gaming (as far as PS3 goes anyway).

Here go my recommendations:

Valkyria Chronicles: I'm the third one to recommend it, but probably the one who has babbled the most about it in here. I can't stress enough how epic this game is. GET IT. For your own sake, GET IT.

Metal Gear Solid 4: This is a tricky one. It's not a war game for the sake of blowing stuff up, and the addition of non lethal weaponry like a sniper rifle that shoots tranquilizer darts, a handgun that does the same and the general anti nuke message of the whole series makes this a game I go back and revisit, even after having beaten it more than 20 times... YES, 20 TIMES already. BUT (and there is a BUT), while newcomers to the series can ejoy the game, the full scope is dependent on having played every game before it.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2: Ninja running around, cutting baddies / robots / monsters / bigass demons / HUUUUGE statues, etc is cool as hell. I recommend the first too.

Street Fighter 4: Well, it's Street Fighter... You know what to expect...

BlazBlue (Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift): Fighting game. The reason I mention CT, which is the first and CS, the second, is because in addition to the normal arcade mode, these two contain a full fledged story mode with multiple endings for all the characters. The story itself is very interesting, ranging from sad, dramatic, badass to even hilarious (especially in CS's gag reels). The fighting system is VERY different from Street Fighter 4's. To my standards, it is much deeper, each character is unique, with some relying on traps, status ailments, tricks and unorthodox maneuvers for combat in addition to the usual power, speed and endurance archetypes found everywhere.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection / Ultimate Megadrive Collection (correct me here, Semix! I know you have this one!): Easy as pie. A bundle of classics from the 16 bit era are in there. Streets of Rage, Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic and Knuckles easily warrant the buy for me. HOWEVER, it also packs the main classic Phantasy Star series. PSII, PSIII, PSIV and PSI included as an unlockable game... You only have to finish Sonic 2's first act with two players. Ridiculously easy. Oh, the total count of games in there is rather large. Shinobi 3, Kid Chameleon, Vectorman 1 and 2, Altered Beast (both Genesis and Arcade versions) and others are all included.

Those are the ones that come to mind out of the blue. I'll add more if I think you could like some others. Keep in mind, those are disc based games. I'll babble now about downloadable games you can go and buy off the PSN store.

Megaman 9: I dunno if you played the NES Megaman games. If you have noticed, Benito has been mentioning it lately. It's lots of fun, and yes, it's unforgivingly difficult.

Megaman 10: Pretty much the same as the 9th. Great gameplay, nice music (especially the last stages and Sheep Man's theme), but the added feature is that if you find the game too hard, you can always go into easy mode.

Flower: One of my favorites. Basically you use the controller's tilt sensor to change directions and any button to accelerate. You play as the wind and your job is to make flowers bloom all over. Sounds silly? Well, it's not. Go and see on youtube for yourself.

Sonic 4: People say it's good. I didn't quite like it THAT much, so I won't buy it anytime soon. Still, it's a Sonic game...

Blade Kitten: It's a side scrolling game that plays more or less like the games of old, but looks like the games of... last generation... Still, the game is an excellent change of pace, and the story and the main character earn a gold star from me (out of one gold star ) because of how refreshing they feel. Word of warning, the game is like $15. Hopefully it'll drop in price or something.
I can brag I got it for free in a giveaway hosted by Krome Studios by suggesting new items for the second episode. YAY!! Hopefully, my suggestions will make it in!

Sonic Adventure: The OOOOOLD Dreamcast game was recooked and released on the PSN. I'd like to get it.

Not really a PS3 title, but a PS1 title that you can buy off the PSN store:

Metal Gear Solid 1: Worth every penny. It's around $9, I think, and so relatively cheap. Still, it's one of the best PS1 games and one people who have played the series have enjoyed the most. Personally I can't decide, but hey, it's worth it.

I've played and beaten every NES Megaman game, including the two new ones on Wiiware

My roommate loves MGS and picked up Guns of the Patriots for $20 from a discount bin. Although I'm sure the game is a technological achievement, I played the MGS1 remake for the Gamecube (I think it is the same as the PS1 version...) and didn't like it very much. I'm sure I'll give MGS4 a try eventually. I just wont hold my breath for it.

We have SF4 for Xbox 360. To be honest...I like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom more. The lack of aerial combos in SF4 kind of throws me off. Plus, the roster in TvC is just so damn cool. SF4 is definitely a good fighter though. And of course, compared to Nintendo, has a good online mode.

The Ultimate Genesis collection seems like something for me. I completely forgot about its existence. I was a total Genesis kid during the mid nineties (hence why I've barely played any SNES games) so this could deffinitely serve as nostalgia. Plus, it would be a good excuse to finally give PS a try. Also, I already plan on downloading Sonic 4 during Christmas holidays.

Looks like Valkyria Chronicles is a popular pick. I'll think about it.
