200 meters per second for the initial speed should be enough to launch, I think. A firing angle of 45 degrees should provide the maximum reach.
Responding to your question about how much the reach is enhanced by firing from an elevated position, yes. You get a certain enhancement, but as the length of the flight time (horizontal) advances, the gravity's vertical component wins, pulling the projectile towards the earth. Imagine the initial horizontal speed (x), as a constant quantity until the vertical movement goes back to zero, hitting the ground.
Regarding your question about whether the projectile would go into the ground, make it shake or something, it depends on the projectile, the ground, the angle, etc. A 100 kg projectile would make lots of noise, sure, but depending on the factors I told you, there could be different scenarios.
