argh... made a mistake...

Crap? I thought I had responded.

200 meters per second for the initial speed should be enough to launch, I think. A firing angle of 45 degrees should provide the maximum reach.

Responding to your question about how much the reach is enhanced by firing from an elevated position, yes. You get a certain enhancement, but as the length of the flight time (horizontal) advances, the gravity's vertical component wins, pulling the projectile towards the earth. Imagine the initial horizontal speed (x), as a constant quantity until the vertical movement goes back to zero, hitting the ground.

Regarding your question about whether the projectile would go into the ground, make it shake or something, it depends on the projectile, the ground, the angle, etc. A 100 kg projectile would make lots of noise, sure, but depending on the factors I told you, there could be different scenarios.

I couldn't see a way to attach a file to a PM, so I'm dumping it here. I extrapolated the velocity and arc height based off of a 45 degree vector and a quick CAD sketch. If you want me to reprocess with a couple changes, I can get recalculating by tomorrow morning. I think an interesting way to increase the velocity would be to use a straight drop weight, fed into a 1:2 pulley system, that's attached to the force side of the lever. The weight would have to increase to counteract the mechanical disadvantage, but it might feasibly increase the speed enough to decrease the elevation needed while looking cooler than snot for the story.

200 m/s is pretty damn quick for a medieval projectile weapon- the DGIV in my signature has a wing stall speed of 180 m/s.

Ah, I found a nice java applet for explaining the angle thingy.

You can modify variables like mass, angle and velocity. Play with it and you can get a nice illustration.

Sadly, you can't modify the launching altitude, but you get the idea with this:

That sim suggests that my math may have been wrong, but I'm heading to bed now. It looks like about 85 m/s might combine with less than a kilometer of height to hit correctly. Course, you could also write into your story that the engineers screwed up in the math and resulted in the enemy army getting too close.... 8)

More math. @_@

Carlos, I'll inspect all this tomorrow. Haven't replied to your email yet, but I think what you've created for the tropes should be enough to build on. I'll do some work on it tomorrow, I hope. Ugh. Too much to do.

I keep leaving homework until past 11pm recently, and being too tired to finish it, this has to stop...
On another note, some troll on here got cut down and deleted within seconds, good work :D

It was closer to minutes this time- I had managed to use the report post button 4 times before the punk got acquainted with the pain of deletion.

Yea I got the spammer in time this time. Thanks for the reports. To note, phpbb3 has some amazing banning features. I can ban/delete a user and erase all their posts in one quick click. A lot more convenient than phpbb2.

Missagh as soon as he discovered he could ban/delete users and erase their existences in one click: "POWER! UNLIMITED POOOOOWEEEEEER!!!!"

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Edit 1: I'm thinking of writing a Phantasy Star III fairy tale. Well, the first of a few vague ideas I have. I'm not sure if I should go for the next RTA installment or the fairy tale.

Ah, just woke up, and marveled at how long my to-do list has gotten. Got 3 things to write, a strategy to prepare, cats to feed, emails to send, resumes to mail, and a car to maintain. Guess I have an excuse to get out of the house today.
